I remember when I was visiting my ex FIL. He took me to a farmer's house in NE Missouri on the Iowa line. This farmer had a great workshop with all kinds of tools. He showed me his prize possession of 400 year old Black Walnut, Locust and a shed full of amazing wood. He showed me how he made his bowls and such doing this exact method. I politely told him he could save triple the wood if he just made his segments out of strips of wood and not full wedge pieces. You'd have thought I spit on him and called his wife names while kicking his favorite coon dog. He looked so offended that I would give him any helpful advice on what he was doing. Some people just don't have a clue that others might know something they don't.

The result for each individual face would be one set of diagonal lines plus one set of horizontal lines, but the interplay on the final turned surface might be interesting.
