It's great to see how popular this game still is. I absolutely love the original Lego Racers! Is there a link/group for a Lego Racers modding community?
@@HotRodRacer463 Google 'Lego Racers Modding Rock Raiders United'. There is a modding community and existing mods but it is not active unfortunately. A few people in the speedrunning discord muck about with some mods. There's one fella who is currently back engineering the games code. You can feel free to join and have a chat. Even I have made a basic custom brick layout for the game!
I´m currently having a weird issue, I can´t superslide to the left. When I hold down the up and down key the left key doesn´t do anything while the right key works fine. Is this just something with my keyboard? Do you have any thoughts on it?
@@legoflashgamer are you using a laptop keyboard? Unfortunately some keyboards can only receive a maximum amount on inputs at once. forward, backwards, left/right, and spacebar makes 4 inputs at once. I wonder if your keyboard can't register them? The same happens on my laptop keyboard. It's very unfortunate!
I'm so happy that this amazing game still has an active community today. Also a great video, not many speed runners explain things that well to casuals like me :D
I just googled it. Yep, you're 100% right! I just recorded a new video where I meant to use the term "post factum" but instead used the term "posthumously" to mean to have done something after I had died. I'm embarrassed to admit that my day job is as a Primary School Teacher 🙃
I am one of said folks who found you through the guide and subbed! Fun stuff. One of the most beloved games of my childhood, so fun to see it played at such a high level. Nice job on the run, grats on WR, here's to future improvements!
At some point I decided to change my layout so that all of the splits are on screen at once. I forgot that just because it's at the correct dimensions on my second monitor doesn't mean that it was the correct dimensions on OBSs window capture and I forgot to check it before recording 😭
Interesting. I must have had the 2001 version as a kid because I specifically remember collecting 2 powerups next to each other when positioned in a line. Tried to download this and its sequel in 2013 but it was impossible.
N64 version is actually very similar to 2001 PC version. So while there are obviously still differences to 99 version, N64 version should (technically) be viable for speedrunning. Through my own TASing of the N64 version, I've noticed more input lag compared to PC version. Also, you should be able to super slide by pressing A+B+R simultaneously and turning.
I am so pleased to discover there are several hidden layers of depth - in possibly my alltime favourite childhood game - that make it still worth playing to this day. Godspeed
@@nonAehT You and I both! If you remember what the CD and case looks like that's one way to tell. The community still is debating about how brick weight works. I only discovered about a month ago that you can weight a vehicle towards the front or back. You can find my new WR on the desert track where I manipulate the cars weight to pull back and clip into the ground for a great boost off of the start line! It's an awesome game to speedrun
@@vincentauronward347 from a quick google search: it was definitely the cover art with the close up.of just rocket racer and gypsy moth that didn't have the green track background (with the skull thing and fireball). Which version was that (europe, pc) ?
Hey! This is a fantastic video! I dont care about Lego Racers speedrunning, but you made me care. Really really entertaining, i would love to see more videos from you about things youre passionate about in this style!
@@zenoooooo @zenoooooo Hello! I think you're my first content creator subscriber. Incidentally I've been binging lots of TF2 content over the last week from Chucklenuts, Fishstickonastick, Uncy Dane, Weezy, and Toofty! I've watched your achievement speedrunning and Airstrike video at some point as well which were really great. Something has happened with the algorithm for LR over the last few days, this vid went from 2k views to over 6k now. Thanks for the support! I'm not a content creator, I'm just a fella who speed runs who wanted to make something fun. I recorded a new PB for LR last night though and might upload that with commentary over the next few days. Take care!
I've played this game since I was a child, I still have my 1999 disc on my shelf in its original jewel case, and somehow I'm learning about mechanics I never even thought of before. I didn't even know this game had a weight system for the various chassis. I do remember using snap slides but never even thought of it as an actual mechanic, though the super warps are definitely something I've never seen before. Very informative video, I'm not a speedrunner at all but it's great to have a video that explains a lot of stuff about one of my most beloved games of all time.
@@thilordtachanka314 the short version is... More bricks = higher top speed and higher weight. You're slower out of warps. Less bricks = lower top speed and lower weight. You're faster out of warps. Check out my Desert Adventure Dragway upload from a month ago for a 1-brick vehicle. Watch how fast I come out of warps. On Rocket Racers track I use so many green boosts where I immediately reach top speed that it's faster than the advantage of coming out of warps quicker!
Thanks! I'm not a content creator. This is my only video. All of my other video are speedrun uploads. This video has gone up in the algorithm over the last 2 days though and I've gotten a bunch of new views and comments which is nice. Thanks for watching!
I remember playing this game a lot on the Nintendo 64 when I was in elementary school. To be poetic, I even decided to walk through the single player mode on the morning before my last day at high school. I finished the single player tournament within about 30 minutes. I didn't realize that I just speedran it. I also remember an odd bug in Knightmare-Athon where if you start a warp in the final section with the floating ship, the warp ends where you just started. I remember watching this bug in action while messing around in 2 player mode. I assume it's the ship causing it, but that's just me being a bit salty.
@@Homerboy44 oh interesting! I don't know about that warp one. I'll try it out. I'm hoping that with the warp going past the start line maybe a lap skip glitch can activate or something. I played the game to death as a kid and picked it up again and started speedrunning about 20 years later. It's an amazing game but definitely stuff to play for newcomers today!
@@vincentauronward347 I forgot to state that the warp bug I mentioned isn't a lap skip, the warp simply stalls there. I am certain I have lost a couple races over it. It's worth mentioning, but not worth speedrunning over. XD This is on the Nintendo 64 version, so I am not sure if this bug occurs on either PC version.
You know I always wanted an explanation of how the car design affected the physics. And after all these years I finally get an answer (sort of). Interestingly enough I never used the Turbo Cart Chassis.
@@vincentauronward347 Does it also not depend on what version of the game you have? I believe that the N64 version has two different versions and the engine behaves quite a bit differently between the two of them. Edit: Right i commented without actually watching the video but you explain it right there.
@@vigigamehacker123 There are a couple of reasons. The example from the video is Knoghtmare-athon where you want to deliberately contaminate a red brick with a blue one. This is because NPCs will pick this up and immediately use the shield no matter who is around them where as they will not use the red brick unless someone drives in front of them. This means they would then drive into the green brick at.the start line with no power up in their inventory and not contaminate it like they would if they had the red brick. The second for example (Adventure Temple Trail) when you warp directly into a white brick to pick it up as you enter the warp animation. If you then drive into a blue or red brick as you exit warp then it means that you will be wasting the white brick that you deliberately picked up while entering warp. We do our best to avoid picking up these blue and red bricks as we leave warp but it can be extremely difficult at high speeds and requires a consistent setup to avoid doing so. Thanks for watching the video!
"This is an awful track to grind." Couldn't agree more. Just played the game myself after such a long time and this track stuck out lore a sore thumb. I almost couldn't believe this wasn't tool assisted. Well done, well done.
Join the discord server and post your questions and screenshots! Generally though you need to run in admin mode and have compatibility set for Windows XP. There are also programs like Voodoo which are external launchers which can help with graphical errors.
