Wow, thank you for posting this. I lived in Hillside, Maryland attending Bradbury Heights Elementary school after starting the 1st grade at Kentland Elementary in Sept 1963 till Jan 1964 & then moving to Hillside & living in the Marlboro Gardens Apartments. Parents taking us to the Hillside Drive In movies was a huge thrill & going to the Coral Hills inside movie theater with its balcony seating. WPGC was our favorite radio station & getting chocolate malts from the Peoples Drug Store soda fountain.
Was born and raised in Hyattsville. Listening to WPGC and also WEAM out of Alexandria, Va. Great place to grow up back then. Loved going to the Hyattsville movie theater to watch sci-fi movies every Saturday. Alas, Hyattsville is no longer the place I grew up in.
Growing up in Hyattsville I can remember going with my family to Ledo's Italian restaurant, and the line to get in being around the block! There was also Shakey's pizza (I think it was on Riggs road) and the piano player who would play the upright with multi colored hammers inside the instrument lit by black light.
Fascinating and thanks for posting. I remember the long, gone Mighty Mo and Tops. Bill's Hardware stopped hardware about five years ago and I think is a liquor store today. I remember seeing films at the Hyattsville drive-in as late as the mid-70s. I drank at the Tick Toc long ago. The Grand Union in Bladensburg is a thrift store for Hispanics.Lustine's is still open. The Italian Inn closed for good in 2015 but the building still stands- for now. An Hispanic bakery has bought the building. The Peace Corps stands- for now. An atheist group wants to knock it down for being religious.
This is really great! Thanks bringing back all the good memories! WPGC Good Guys Marvelous Marv and Tiger Bob, Dean Griffith (?) and you can win 2 Miniature Golf Games! Big prizes !!!
I grew up in Hyattsville and attended Northwestern. Lived the bulk of my childhood life there. Lots of great memories! Heard a few things from my favorite radio station WPGC I hadn't heard in decades. Thanks for posting!
Outstanding! I grew up in Bladensburg. Graduated from Bladensburg High in 66 and spent most weekend evenings driving between the Hot Shoppes at Capital Plaza and the Mighty Mo in Queenstown. Wish I could relive those days just for a weekend. Am currently in western Howard Co. Many thanks for the post. Wayne Sullivan
Well Weaver547 doesn't have my permission to the the Autoburger picture right at the start. That's my 1999 Trans Am parked next to the '58 Ford Ranchero
The is the first town I lived in 1955 - 1960. I grew up in this area. Weile's ice cream was the BEST! Those pictures of Prince George's Plaza just brought back a flood of memories. I can remember the smell of the stores.
I grew up in Lanham and Landover Hills,,,,Boy this sure brings back memories... Tricia ,, I agree the only thing missing is the Bladensburg Roller Rink..
