This sounds scary, but in person it’s even SCARIER. It sounds like it could be thunder or something, it took me a bit to realize it was the Emu at the petting zoo.
If you rescue a baby robin, keep it in a soft small animal carrier and bring it to a nearby place to where you found it. The bird family will hear the chirps and come to the bird. Until then feed the bird suet with mealworms or fish-bait earthworms. Until you find a carrier, a large tall Dunkin Donuts box will be ok just be sure to put holes in it and give the bird food like bagels that have been soaked in water with a tweezers or your fingers to feed it. It will open its mouth while hungry then will often sleep. Take the bird out and let it practice flying, it will come back to you, give it food then. The parent birds will follow the rescued bird to a nearby roost (forested area with lots of bushes that produce worms and in the fall berries) . Let the bird learn to fly and it will go back to its family; usually the male will come out and get it back. It will still like you and its brother and sister birds will preen near you if you give sit nearby. While the bird is in your care, birds like to watch recorded robin calls on RU-vid you can find some that are 10 hours. It will help the bird be wild and socialize with its kind while you are taking care of it. When its family finds the bird, make sure that the bird can still transition and can come to you for suet, and its family will come also. In the fall, the bird will fly near you, but will be wild. It will be very fast and will still come to you if you call its name. My bird was Star Bright. Star Bright's family joined with other bird families starting late August and they would stay in the neighborhood. Then one day right before a strong lightning storm, they left I think to go south. Although I was glad Star Bright was back with her feathered kind, I realized that at best she had two years to live, but with me she would have been alive for up to fourteen years, and I would have enjoyed her chirpy commentary watching her fly, and watching a bird song movie on my computer with her. She will be missed and it was great to get to know her a truly wild intelligent being.
I’ve heard the great horned owl calls for years but this year I heard the. ‘‘ screech sound ’ along with the ‘hoots’, for the first time - south central British Columbia, Canada.
Thanks for posting this. My dogs were going ballistic about 11pm but when I flipped on the floodlights I couldn’t see anything. The dogs are contained to a deck at night as part of our property is still native vegetation and have dealt with nocturnal wildlife before. I got a high intensity flashlight and scanned the area and saw 2 yellow eyes reflecting back and I heard a sound that was unfamiliar and went searching for sounds from wildlife in our area. This is what I heard and others within several miles have spotted them in their yard. I have 4 large dogs all over 50 pounds so doubt it will climb the deck. My previous German Shepherd did bring me an armadillo and also brought a opossum into the house and killed it in the kitchen, along with an occasional skunk spray. My neighbor has had his dog quilled several times by a porcupine in his yard. After we built a gate to contain the dogs at dusk, we have been fortunate.
Some times it sounds like a wild bird...a falcon, an eagle or something similar... and other times, like a violent XXX movie. But, anyway, it is an awesome cat, I love it!
This may confused less experienced birders of people who are generally curious. The video mentioned American Crow and showed them a few times but the call example was that of a Carrion Crow which is lower pitched. The "Gray" Crow is actually called the Hooded Crow. Americans don't really need to worry about Rooks, Jackdaws, or Hooded Crows. The tradeoff though is that all of our raven and crow species are all black and very similar to each other. Unless you're near Brownsvilled Texas where the slightly more distinct Tamaulipas Crow can be found. Also in North America we have two species of Ravens and three crow species (formerly four).
Definitely what I had to scare off on a camp ground by Madison (blue mound) thaout it was raccoons till the girl and kind asked me to scare it away. Pretty sure it made a kill. He didn't like me yelling at him. I've heard wolves and bears close to me at night in the woods. That was a new one for me
Swifts are awesome. But the metric system sucks. In future documentaries please use miles and feet or yards. Yes, I can do the conversions in my head but it's a hassle and I bet most of your viewers are in the US.
