Hi, my name is Buffy Kaufman. I am a Southern California Artist, Instructor, Brand Ambassador for Daniel Smith Watercolors and Signature Member of Louisiana Watercolor Society. I'm inspired by color and artistic wanders in the desert, mountains, and coastline. Being self-taught I understand the importance of having a pathway to study art and enjoy recycling my studies into instruction. I have created this channel believing that art is better shared!
Hi Buffy, My name is Linda. Im thinking of getting the Otto Stretcher. Paper buckling is a challenge. 😮 I have seen several of your videos and noticed you have taped your paper to a board abd used the Otto Stretcher. Which method do you perfer: tapping or the Otto Strectcher? Thank you for your videos they are amazing!
Hi Linda, thank you for writing, the Otto Stretcher for larger paintings and if its 11 x 14 or smaller I just tape. The Otto stretcher is best but I paint so often I tend to tape whenever I can. The Otto just takes a little longer, but is worth it and is so nice to paint on a flat surface. Additionally I tried the 200 pound paper by Saunders Waterford (found it at Jacksons) and it warps a lot less than the 140 pound. Hope this helps
Thanks for sharing your palette! I have the DS Quin Red. I love it. .Prussian Green is an interesting color made with 2 pigments. PB27-Prussian Blue and PY35-Cadmium Yellow. Only the PB27 could fade but not every batch of PB27 will. Some is very good. Neither pigment is very granulating on their own, so DS probably adds a granulating medium into the mix.
Hi, according to Daniel Smith Website and Tube label this Prussian Green is made with PB27 (Prussian Blue) & PY97 (Hansa Yellow Medium) - they no longer use the PY35 (Cadmium) but switched out to Cadmium Hues using a base of PY53 (toxicity reasons) - fun fact the PY97 (Hansa Yellow Medium) is also used in some of their other colors that use more than one pigment such as Indian Yellow, Naples Yellow, New Gamboge, Olive Green, and Prussian Green. - thank you for watching and sharing your pigment knowledge. Always a joy to find other artist who love the study of color
Bonus: I received this answer from John Cogley (owner and CEO of Daniel Smith) after asking him if they add any granulating medium to the paints: 'The color, opacity, staining and granulation are due to the pigment only. We don’t use any type of granulation medium. The other manner in which our colors granulation is due to several pigments in the same color like Moonglow or the various elements in a natural mineral that causes different specific gravity and therefore granulation. So NO Daniel Smith uses no granulation medium. Thank you Buffy."-- John
It seems like you have a robust audience, so my comment may seem unhelpful (NOT my intention) but it would be very helpful if less of your video screen was the palettes (HALF the screen of the video is filled with palettes!!) and more of a zoom into the part of the artwork you are working on. If you are filming these videos with the intention that they be watched full screen on a larger monitor, the video quality isn't high enough for that, so you might consider bumping that up- I'm watching on the highest HD your video allows and even in the quarter size box on my screen, there's absolutely no definition. I'd love to see more of the nuances of your colors and the way the paint is "dancing", which I think is the real magic of what you do! Just a gentle suggestion- I watch tons of watercolor content, and I'd love to see up closer to how you are working.
I just started offering these live streams on my channel, to film I use an overhead webcam, (webcams will autofocus at times, I think this may be what you are referring to?) I chose to share the palette and ramekins as the color mixing was such an important part of this lesson. Yes, this community is wonderfulI, so happy to share my journey here. Very excited about it, love the interaction and engagement.🩵
Helpful, found a setting to turn off the AF and switch to Manual, as well as a zoom ability, hopefully I can make/play with these camera adjustments for higher quality live streams. 🙏🏼
What an absolutely gorgeous piece of art! Oh, and the video was great too! 😂 Seriously though this was such an informative video and I learned so much that I'm already planning to watch it again. Always love your videos and so appreciate the time you take to share and teach your techniques. Thank you! Oh, I almost forgot I about died when I was closing the video and you popped back up saying you forgot something. 😂 I died laughing, although inside I was screaming NO don't ruin it! Turns out you know what your doing, because it made it look like the light was coming in the room making striations of light. An amazing brush! If anyone who missed the last 2 minutes of the video it's worth going back to watch. 😊
I couldn't pull myself away after I said I was leaving. I missed only the very beginning where you were probably explaining about aqua board. Could you please re-explain?
I've thoroughly enjoyed watching your process, but I do have to leave now. I’d really appreciate it if you can record the rest so we can watch you finishing up the painting. The colors you chose are amazing! Very relaxing.😊Thank you!
Hi Buffy, I am so glad to check out your demo regarding painting on Aquabord! I painted on Aquabord a few years ago, and have been thinking about trying them again. Also, I am located in Southern California, and I always enjoy learning from you.
this plastic palette is actually made my Richeson, it has a Daniel Smith sticker on it. The ceramic ramekins insode it are my Sawyer Ceramics. Here is my Amazon Affiliate link to my art page that lists the Richeson Palette along with some other favorite supplies : www.amazon.com/shop/watercolorpour/list/3O4KJDSVX00JI?

No these dot cards are not available for sale, they are handed out at in person events and art stores, but they do have a massive dot card that has all their colors, here is my Amazon Influencer Art page link that lists it and other great Daniel Smith products: www.amazon.com/shop/watercolorpour/list/16Q6J2MKKODQR
Opus carries the large dot cards too, I like them as you can sample any colors you see in YoyTube channels, opusartsupplies.com/en-us/search?q=Daniel+smith+dot+cards
Such a beautiful finished painting. If you are putting this in an open frame (no glass), how do you protect the watercolour from dust and grime. Can you use some kind of varnish, Dorland wax .....? Thank you for the time given, really enjoyed, am in Dorset, UK.
Great question! The Ampersand RU-vid mentions different ways of preserving. I LOVE Dorlands Wax for paper, but worry it might move/shift/lift the painting during application. ( the paint on these panels lift very easy) I am going to try the Gallery Series archival spray (matte) finish by Krylon. I have used that for paper art and it has a nice even finish. Want to use matte to not take away from the watercolor, a shiny finish may take away from it. Will add a thin first coat on my painting to test, and let dry. Will update in the description once I have time to test this out. Thank you so much for watching 😀
Again thx.....I missed the live and wanted to extend my gratitude to you for your time and teaching. I keep working toward other substrates because.......I am in galleries and as you said framing is ARGGGGG!..... loves
Wonderful! Perfect timing, glad to find other artists interested in this too. It would be so nice to paint, add a spray finish to protect, the eye hooks and wire and deliver or ship! Hoping I can learn this product to use, I have one more panel on hand and will probably share another video on that painting too, do you think I should include how this ones looks after I add the spray finish?
If you watch to the very, very end, I use a special brush to make those lines. I say I’m done a few times but keep going throughout the video, having too much fun! 😂
12" x 16" you can purchase at art supply stores and Amazon - here is my Art page Affiliate link where I found it on Amazon: www.amazon.com/shop/watercolorpour/list/2CLFKIVVF5NXU
Whhaaattt?!? You teach in Fallbrook? Most people don’t even know where Fallbrook is, lol. I’d LOOVVVVEEE to attend one of your classes… and may even be able to convince my mom to join me.
So cool! Yes, if you sign up for my newsletter www.watercolorpour.com (scroll to the bottom) I send out a monthly newsletter at the end of each month announcing the dates/times for class. I teach every month at The Green Art House and usually a couple times a year at The Fallbrook School of the Arts. So excited! Hope to meet you and your mom #itsasmallworld
@@watercolorpour wow. What a small world indeed! I will look into this, thank you so very much. If I’m not signed up, I will do so. However, I must admit I’m not the best with tracking email.
Hope your infusion went well Pamela. This was a fun painting, playing, practicing, and learning this Aquabord while at the same time trying to capture the subject, all in real time and live stream, phew! Very exciting project - Aquabord is pretty cool 😎😅😂
Hi Buffy, sorry I couldn’t make the live show. I started my day watching this tutorial, what a treat! I think your finished painting was so fresh with stunning colour blends. I’m sure you made painting on Aquabord look easier than it is. I’m going to see if I can source it in UK together with some stencil making equipment and give a try. Many thanks again, love watching you work and listening to your commentary.
Hi Marion, the time difference is tricky, but now that I am becoming more comfortable with the live stream I hope to do it more often and occasionally do some at alternate time for members that are not here in the states 🩵💜🩵 the Aquabord is surprisingly user-friendly if taken slowly and adjusting to the fact of how bendable/liftable it is. Keeping that in mind was helpful to me as I painted on it 😍
