Suffered horribly from stage fright, hated being photographed or recorded. She almost had to be begged to perform. What a voice. Maybe real folk music will come back some day...
From Where I Lie/Sheepcounting Lyrics, by John Tams From where I lie The sheep can safely graze The farm breasts through the haze And all is still From where I lie A magpie skirts the vale Reminder now of this o'er-deepening dale And all is still From where I lie Where paper pours through doors Where bureaucratic laws deny what's yours And all is still From where I lie Where rushing water scores Where bankers close their doors And all is still From where I lie This shotgun is my friend A single not uncommon end And all is still From where I lie I take a cartridge new And on it scratch some words for you And all is still Sleep my pretty one sleep Lay down in your lambskin Now lay you down deep And I'll fold you in woolsey Down-soft don't you weep my lamb Sleep my pretty one, sleep One ewe tomorrow true Two ewes aplenty Three oh how happy we Four nearly gentry Five how we favoured be Six trust to glory And seven the world is right Eight tells the story Nine we may prosper true Ten we can start anew Sleep my pretty one sleep Lay down in your lambskin Now lay you down deep And I'll fold you in woolsey Down-soft don't you weep my lamb Sleep my pretty one Sleep my pretty one Sleep And all, and all is still ...
Beautiful. Wish she could have sung it with Dire Straits. Because, frankly - fantastically beautiful though the singing is - this version misses out on the amazing, powerful instrumentation of the original - especially the impeccable guitar and its lyricism
She could easily have been a well-known and popular artist in the 50s but it seems she wasn't ambitious at all. We're so lucky these home recordings have been unearthed. Obviously a huge influence on her son too.
Dylan borrowed the tune for Bob Dylan's Dream but what a beautifully unsurpassed version of the song is here. Moving words, voice and accompaniment. Loved McCarthy from my teens.
I'm a Dubliner and only started to listening to Damien Dempsey the last 2 years or so. When I was younger I probably disregarded him or thought I was too cool to listen to him. Sometimes we've a tendency to overlook our own. I love his singing and signwriting. Very deep, meaningful and full of wisdom. I love this song in particular.
Crazy Cat Vietnam 1969 .. i need her voice more the older I get (83) I returned to into Quaker pacifist meetings in 1974 I am still trying to live the life . For all creatures Peace hoa Binh
I love this song so much. I can't decide who has my favorite version. If someone put a gun to my head I'd probably say Anne Briggs, but there are so many beautiful versions. (And a few less than beautiful ones as well.)
Not as easy to play as you’d think. There are faster reels, this one almost sounds like an air. Duncan plays it with lots of subtleties that take a lot of time to carefully listen too, understand and commit to memory. For the benefit of amateur musicians (like myself) this is being played in the key of D and starts on A. Best of luck learning to play it. Sounds really nice played on flute or low D whistle.
Carthy and Swarbrick, The Watersons, The Young Tradition and this crystal clear voice were my introductions to traditional music nearly 6 0 years ago..So simple but so beautiful.
