We all would rather destroy ourselves and each other. Because violence makes people feel good, makes us feel powerful, right, and in control. Its short-term pleasures against long term prosperity. And the short term shit usually winds out. That is why we are a fundamentally fucked species. Until the day when we choose not to be.
I can hear every captain's voice making this speech. From Kirk going over the top to Burnham being too emotional and everyone in between. I hear them, in my head.
If there are convicted by this, they would have never gotten so close to extinction in the first place. The problem is not the understanding. The problem is in the DNA. Logical thinking and reasoning are not the primary tools of the brain. It is far more beneficial for survival to align your beliefs with those of your tribe (whatever you think that is). Therefore the brain will bend and flex ignoring all common sense to fit whatever it thinks is in line with your tribe. There is no actual possibility to get people to break from these chains of internal programming. Humanity is doomed because 99,9% of us are nothing more than mindless slaves to their DNA.
i like how they put a similarity between this version of Pike and the Kelvin version of Kirk. breaking the rule of never interfering in other species to save them from bestruction
Since there could be no acknowledgment of the Battle near Xahea (season 2 finale in Star Trek Discovery) even taking place, then nor could there of how the people of Kiley 279 acquired warp capability. The people of Kiley 279 had unwittingly discovered the battle and, thanks to the various warp signatures during the battle, had reverse-engineered the Matter-antimatter reaction to create a "warp bomb" to use in their growing conflict. In 2259, the USS Archer mistook a test of the weapon for the planet's first usage of warp drive and went to initiate First contact. The resulting incident with it and the Enterprise lead to a greater push for General Order 1 to be the driving force for the Federation as the "Prime Directive".
And yet, we are still close to WW3 than ever, because greed is what we are holding dear the most...Maybe is for the best! Humankind doesn't deserve this planet!
I keep coming back to this thinking about how things are in the world right now, scared to death of what might happen. This is one of the few glimmers of hope I have that things will be okay.
This scene for me is one of the most pure Star Trek moments I have ever seen. Because sure the struggle that comes with exploring the universe is important. The exploration as well. The moral quandaries that new circumstances present. But in my mind the most integral part of Star Trek is the hopeful look into the future. To dream of what we could and should aspire to be. Pikes conviction is visible on every single crew mate. They recognize his words for the dream they all share. The most noble cause that unifies people of different convictions. The dream to explore the stars.
Looks like we are heading to this direction... Biden the mindlessness and Putin the dying angry man wants a world war 3. But don't think Star Trek way of life is going to happen people. It's NOT. Why? Look at the bombs... They are not like the ones tested in New Mexico on July 16th 1945 or the ones dropped on Japan... They no longer Kilotons... They are Megatons and biggest is 100Mt. We will cease to exist, or right back to the stone age again, not star trek way where some "Vulcans" will give us a helping hand.
Remember: Politicians wants to move on the chess board. Where are you on that board? Nowhere to be found. It their little war games to hurt people for their own selfish gains! - Politicians are nasty creatures.
Someone should tell the current administration to watch this. They are hell bent on war with Russia, China and virtually every Muslim country. Call trump all the names you want. He is the only president that didn’t start a war. Who cares what his reasons were? People weren’t burning to death and blowing up under him. 3 years of Biden changed all that
Why humanity doesn't learn from itself and it's own sci-fi stories is beyond me. Sci-fi like Star Trek shows the way to a much better (in my view) world but we continue to try to maintain the ugly status quo.
what would happen if a rep from an advanced ET civilisation went to the UN and layed it down like that? would everybody cut out the bullshit or would they just shove their heads up their own a holes like they usually do? maybe it already happened?
We as a human race have a choice. We can either prosper as a species together, or not all all. We always say we humans learn from our mistakes. That history is our teacher to not make the same mistakes that our ancestors did. An entire history of bigotry, racism, wars, genocide, poverty and so much more....and we still have not learned. I just hope that we learn it sooner rather than later. Before its too late and before our children and our children's children suffer the consequences.
Honestly could’ve been much better without the music and all of the cuts to different characters. I’ve noticed this a lot with new movies and shows, they just love to fill dramatic and emotional moments with copious amounts of overdramatic music and cuts to different people. Meanwhile the really good stuff we all remember from Kirk, Picard, and Janeway all had next to no cuts, no or pretty much no music, and was very centred only on the person speaking.
The constant music in almost every scene certainly distracts from the gravitas of a lot of situations. And the quick cuts during scenes feels like watching a series of tiktoks.
fun fact in star trek very VERY few species ever reached that level of violence against each other i don't think (but could have forgotten) even the klingons for all their violent tendencies ever nuked their own homeworld like we did except for the vulcans and it took them almost 2000 years to fully recover so remember kids in star trek humans aren't trying to avoid military build up cause we're stupid we're avoiding it cause we're terrified we'll just return to our true violent natures and would become the galaxies top apex predators
One thing _Star Trek's_ idealism never actually grapples with is Man's tendency toward evil. You can introduce advanced technology and even advanced morality - but you can't change Man's moral nature. The only One who can do that is the Creator and Savior. On a purely human level, something like the Federation will _never be possible._
This was our last day... That is such a powerful line. We were here, we destroyed ourselves. You will be just as surprised someone pulled the trigger as we were.
Liberal trip. Anyone else notice how they had to get that dig in on Trump supporters by showing video of people protesting the election results? War never solved anything....except slavery, ending Naziism, giving us Democracy itself and on and on......
This is star trek, the brilliance of story telling to educate to be humble respect all ideology and way of life , living together and achieving greatness
So if WW3 started in the star trek universe but really how would of that been possible all technology would of been lost humanity would of been put back thousands of years remember star trek takes place in 2260 to 2300 humanity wouldn't of had the time to rebuild or even make anything straight back to the stone ages no time for advanced tech the earth would of stuck in a radiation famine era
I like how they get around breaking Starfleet General Order 1, the Prime Directive, because this species is 'technically' warp capable but were doing to use that technology for war instead of exploration and they also accidentally gave them that tech by letting one of their ships get scanned by them unknowingly.
Its a message that parallels current events and subtly ties in Pike's storyline from Disco where he sees his own future. What a masterful piece of writing this scene is.
