(25:30) "the next initiative is an annual commitment to American music theater why opera is really a Western European art" - Leonard Bernsteins started this search to the "American opera" (he failed because he wasn't the needed "Amerian Mozart"). - Cheers, Heinz
After some thoughts What if "American Opera" already existed? If it weren't like opera in Western Europe style. But the musical like West Side Story as an original American musical theater style?
I’ve played piano and sung in a lot of retirement/nursing facilities. One of the most amazing things that happens-and it happens quote a lot-is when I start in on an old favorite like “Always” or “Darktown Strutters Ball” and someone who up until that moment looked like a human vegetable suddenly starts singing along.
“One of these days in your travels a guy is going to come to you and show you a nice brand-new deck of cards on which the seal is not yet broken, and this guy us going to offer to bet you that he can make the jack of spades jump out of the deck and squirt cider in your ear. But son, do not bet this man, for as sure as you stand there you are going to wind up with an earful of cider.” - Sky Masterson
4:15 I was just listening to Bobby Short’s “Speaking of Love” album before watching this video! One of my life’s regrets is that I never got to see him perform at Cafè Carlyle.
Picard: Did you read that book I gave you? Wesley: Some of it. Picard: That’s reassuring. Wesley: I just don’t have much time. Picard. There’s no greater challenge than the study of philosophy. Wesley: But William James won’t be on my Starfleet exams. Picard: The important things never will be. Anyone can be trained in the mechanics of piloting a starship. Wesley: Starfleet Academy… Picard: It takes more! Open your mind to the past. Art, history, philosophy…that all this may mean something.
Thank you so much for this wonderful presentation, Sina! I have listened to it several times and plan to share it with my organization. 10:53 15:35 25:37 40:26 44:29 (These are for my own reference for a presentation I'm putting together so that they're clickable for me later. Thanks!)
Amazing presentation previewing many realms of technology. My hope is that they will bring people back to expanding their knowledge beyond the formal years of school. The World is your oyster. Enjoy the delicacy. Thanks, Nik.
