Let’s drive out this discussion of structural steel melting as an important consideration in a structure fire. Steel has two characteristics that are important in fire. It expands as it heats, practically meaning elongates and bends. The other is it loses strength as it heats, so that by 1,100-1200 f, 650 C, about half the strength is gone. Neither characteristic is a good thing if you want your structure to remain standing. Melting point of steel is not an important characteristic in fire. Just as mass timber can use concept of char in its design there are specialized industries that insulate steel to reduce rate of heating in a structure fire. Another characteristic of steel is that it conducts heat much better than wood. Remember that char has no meaningful strength. So that exposed steel fasteners can conduct high temperature into wood that it is fastening, charring the adjacent wood. This is why lightweight lumber trusses utilizing gang plate nails can collapse in ten or fifteen minutes in fire. The plate acts a heat sink, the punched and bent over tabs or nails conduct the heat into the wood, it chars, and connection fails. A few trusses fail, and you get progressive collapse. So how do we prevent steel fasteners from doing the same in a mass timber high-rise? We cover the fasteners with wood, or in the soundproofing aerated concrete on top of floor members.

I'll have to be a little blunt. Not against Ashwaq because she was 14 years old at the time, but at the grown ups in her family. When ISIS (or Daesh or whatever you want to call them) appeared for the first time, they were getting in front of cameras with knives and a victim and started slowly cutting off heads. These Kurds and Yezidis knew what was coming and did not leave. What do you expect? ISIS did not come with gifts and presents. They came with knives to behead and gasoline to burn people alive.

Lol. First of all, Singapore even before independence with Malaysia was a thriving sea port and a developed city state. For example, the University of Malaya was in Singapore before it moved to Malaysia. Stop selling bs as if Singapore was poor fishing village. Secondly, Singapore received a lot of funding from the US and Israel to develop their country by hosting US and Israel military base. For an island nation with less than 1 million population in 1960s, those funding gave Singapore the upper hand in developing infrastructure in an already developed city state. Nothing about Singapore should be praised. Now it is the 4th riches country per capita because their population is very few and has low fertility rate but their poor living in government flats and have to travel to Malaysia to buy groceries. Their middle income population are moving to Malaysia to buy houses and stay there because it is too expensive to live in Singapore. Their young cant afford to buy any property in Singapore. Singapore has successfully made Singaporean pariah in Singapore. What so successful with that?
