I burn lots of scrap in clearing land etc. producing lots of ask and a little charcoal! This helped find toon my efforts in the future. I tried the closed barrel which took large amounts of wood. This is natural and get the carbon to your garden instead of the atmosphere! Thanks!!
I harvested seeds a few years ago and had them growing really well in my basement. The spot I planted them in ended up holding water and I think they all died from that.
Thanks for watching. When this video was filmed we had already collected the last batch of syrup and boiled it down. The evaporator had been removed from the sugar shack for cleaning. We left the last 10 buckets on the tree so we could do a wrap up video.
Hi there. Beautiful shack. I’m building one soon. Sure would of loved to see how the cupola opens and closes. I don’t get what pushes it open. Nobody shows how they work. Sure would appreciate a pointer or two. Thank you.
I'm so glad you found the video! I had an amazing time with the Growing Kindness Project and highly recommend it! I know they've changed some things since the video, so I hope you can find an option that works for you! Thanks so much for watching.
Agree! Wider brush would work just as well. And if I remember correctly she applied it a couple times and saw a reduction in the number of suckers that came back. Not a 100% solution.
Thanks for watching. I think they cook down what they can in the finishing pan over the arch and draw off about 5 gallons worth. Then they cook it down further on the stove. I've made a note to include that in the videos for next year!
We run a small setup round 200 taps it gets boring with just 2 people's so on weekends we get a bunch of buddies together and it's way better to have people to help and talk with
Completely agree - that's half the fun! We have a group that comes out everyday the sap runs to collect. Hope you are having a good season! Thanks for watching
I am stuck in Colorado but my sugar bush is in Vermont. I have an ag exemption which means I have to sugar no matter what. Plan is to move to Vermont full time. February has been cold. So no chance of tapping. The weather was good today but it’s getting cold again tomorrow. The states surrounding Vermont have had good early flows. Some in PA were even 2.5 percent flows. I may wind up waiting out this season. I can run about 3000 taps but I simply can’t get it done this year.
One nice thing when you make charcoal when I made it in a trench or a barrel is if you’re using charcoal for a garden you can just fill the barrel clear full of water or crush it up first into quarter inch sizes and then fill it with water. Add one or two five gallon buckets of chicken manure then let it sit to be inoculated or the charcoal to absorb nutrients and then you can add it tk your garden or in the bottom of the holes before you plant your plants. But ya I’ll have to try your method cause I could use the not completely done stuff for cooking.
There is a draft control knob/lever on the back of the chimney, not sure if it was in the video or not. It doesn't sound like we use it or change it too often though as most of the heat is used up before getting to the chimney. Thanks for watching.
You have a quite an operation. I just subscribed to your channel. I am now retired, but used have a dairy farm. All the extra area on concrete is incredible to have. Where are you located? Check our channel out. Do you have stickers for your channel? I now live in northern Minnesota. Talk Later. I am Al
Thanks for watching and subscribing Al. We'll definitely check out your channel. Having the concrete space has been really nice for several projects and storage. We're not too far east of the Twin Cities. Hope you're having a great day.
Sugar maple gives you 40 gal of sap to 1 gal of syrup. Red maples are closer to 50:1. Still tastes heavenly. I think a bit more rich and flavorful. Birch I'm told is 100:1 and has a minty taste. I haven't done them yet. That'd be a fun little experiment.
It worked great, apparently they don't want light to germinate. But as soon as you start seeing green growth or the white roots growing put them under lights but not on a heat mat. Good luck and let us know how they do!
They did! They actually did quite well. The Blue Bi-Color had the best germination. The flowers were just as robust as the ones that started from a corm. Recommend it!
I have a huge pile of tree scraps I've been wondering if would be better as charcoal. I'll have to try this, it seems to make a better product than the single-barrel method.
The grandsons had a long day before the video and following the camera crew around wasn't the most fun for them. They much prefer running around in the woods collecting sap. Thanks for watching.
