As a former JET in 1993, I invested the money I saved by regularly transferring funds from JPY to USD into my brokerage account-back in the days before everything was digital and just in time of the DOT Com bubble. Today, with everything online, it's easier than ever to take advantage of low stock prices. Even though the yen is weak, investing wisely can still lead to life-changing returns. Remember to do thorough research and be prepared to weather market volatility. Best of luck, and enjoy your time on JET!
Be very careful regarding marrying a Japanese national. If you divorce (rates are higher for mixed race couples) and you have children, there is a chance they will be abducted to Japan never to be seen again. This happens to many foreigners, as Japan does not have joint custody. Abducting parent gets full rights and you'll get nothing and possibly be denied any access. That is the Japanese way.
Hey man, love the videos!-Did you happen select Kobe as one of your placement requests on your application? I’m applying for JET at the moment, but don’t really have a strong preference for a particular city. Was thinking about leaving my preferences blank… Not sure if that means they would just assign me to a “less desired” location by other JETs, or if it would be somewhere based on other criteria, such as my hometown’s sister city, experience teaching etc
Sorry for the late reply! I listed the Kansai area as my preference and then ended up getting placed in Kobe. Anywhere on JET is gonna be unique and a great experience nonetheless. Best of luck with the application!
I've actually returned to the US since that video. I plan on making a video talking about whats next for me and which direction the channel is moving! Its really good to get a realistic approach to budgeting though for JET in my opinion! Thanks for the comment!
Just discovered your channel, really enjoying your videos! How did you end up in Kobe with Jet, did you request the location or was it randomly assigned?
For JET Program they assign you to a location and then you are placed with the local Board of Education! JET is really interesting because different places are handled differently regarding housing/schools etc. Kobe has been a great place for me though!
Thanks for the video Frady. I've accumulated a few of these budgeting videos now and it's always reassuring to see how the salary works out in different places.
You bet! Take it for what it is but I've tried to pretty strict with the numbers. Glad it's giving you a good idea of how to think/prep for JET! Cheers!
@@Chris-ez4yt I think there are lots of resources out there for that! I think you could probably use chatGPT as a baseline and then move along with an edit from there!
Loved the video, my goal is to enter JET after college and then go from there. This video really helped me see how the different expenditures are and gave me an idea of what to expect, thanks!
Absolutely! Lots to think about when living over here. I know how much I wanted a budgeting parameter to go off before I made my way over here. Thanks for the support! Best of luck!
Fortunately with the JET Program we have set hours fron 8:30-4:15 pm. Some JETs choose to stay later but for me, as we aren't paid for overtime, I almost leave exactly at 4:15 everyday! However, lots of people work overtime in Japan!
This was a really cool video, I can’t believe that teacher lived in the US for so long. Why did he come back? Also I never see a gym that empty lol that looks great. Do the teachers ever get together outside of work for drinks or anything?
Prior to corona there was a big scene for teachers going out and drinking but there's not as much of that now unfortunately (that I've been a part of at least) His parents weren't in great health so he chose to move closer to help take care of them! Thanks for watching :)
If you don't mind me asking, about how long did it take for you to feel confident and fluent speaking Japanese? (I'm considering studying it in school.) thx
Its a never ending learning process for sure! I'd say if you're getting your hours of active immersion and passive immersion daily then you can get to a pretty comfortable level around 2 years in! But the more time you pit the faster you'll grow! I still have a long way to go myself! Thanks for your comment and watching!
Haha yes you're correct! We happen to take the same bus everyday I believe! Kobe happens to have a large concentration of JETs! Small little RU-vid world!
@@fradysfilms I want to go back to Asia to teach. I am a primary school teacher here in America. I am looking at going to Japan to teach there. I was teaching English in China the last time I lived in Asia. I loved it so much. Hope you are enjoying teaching over there.
@@jonathanlovesadventure7838 thanks for the watch and comment my guy! You're way ahead of the applying crowd with that teaching degree. Find a country you like and don't be afraid to argue for a higher salary. You're very desirable with that degree and will seeked here!
@@fradysfilms to me the JET program seems like a great way to get started in Japan. More time for learning Japanese, and you don't have the massive amounts of paperwork, IEPs and grading to do as the classroom teacher. Most of our time is not spent teaching. It is spent in meetings and doing IEP paperwork.
Hi Frady! I came across your channel while looking for JET content. I'm going to apply in 2024 with a view for 2025 departure, and am interested to upload my experiences to youtube myself, so I find small content creators as interesting as the mil-subscribed ones. Looking forward to your next vids and seeing Akashi castle :D
That interview was cool! I would have liked to see more if I had to change anything. You two seem to have a good rapport. 😷 I feel your pain on this point too haha But great stuff man! I have subscribed and look forward to more!
Yes it is! Sorry for the late reply. Been here since April of 2022! Been quite an adventure so far! There was so much waiting for our departure with COVID but finally made it over!!
