I wish I'd gone his route and bought the bigger names, more scarce and more popular ones first. I've learned my lesson, but it's too late on T206. I'd rather have ten of the top names than the 100+ (mostly) commons that I have.
Thoroughly enjoyed this episode; as I've embarked on my own quest after The Monster within the last couple years. Not too bad to start with the 4 Cobbs haha! I've got one (green background). I'm at 74 cards. of the 74, 11 are in the top 100 toughest, and 17 are HOFers. So I feel pretty good about my start! I'm also trying to get one example of as many different backs as I can, like your guest- So far I have 14 of the 39 different backs represented at least once; with my rarest being an American Beauty 460 (John McGraw, Hands at Hip).
There was a Cobb I saw at a show in Jacksonville about 8 years ago. Passed typical tells, like font, color of font, and consistent wear. It looked real, but there were no raw T206's at the show to compare it to. He had it in a screw down (was able to free it), the guy trying to sell it didn't have a good story of how he acquired it, so that was enough for me to pass. I might have passed on a great deal, but I've bought questionable authentic cards in the past and got burned.
This was a great conversation. I enjoyed all of it, but the set collecting, what interests me, a lot. There are some challenges when it comes to sets such as, the money, and time it could take to build, a set. But also, as Dan, you mentioned there are certain cards or players, you probably don't care much about. I feel like there comes a time where it does make sense to move on from cards, but the 1948 Bowman, is a good set. You made a valid point, however some of the commons have stories, worth telling. So, I would understand if you continue to hold. Awesome video.
I’ve used SGC for around 25 years. Great customer service, fast turnaround around and fair grading. The only minor gripes I have is that any tiny paper loss on the back of tobacco and caramel cards from 1909-1919, even if the front is exmt gets slammed and also the T210 Old Mill red border cards suffer (even though factory sizes vary) and you might get a card back you think would be a 5 or 6 come back authentic. All in all though they do a good job grading.
Great choice, using SGC. They are so far superior to PSA, it's ridiculous. Much more consistent grades and infinitely better aesthetics. Those larger cards would be off-center, tilting and ugly within their crumpled PSA Baggies (had you used them). Nice reveal!

I’m obviously a little late to the party on this one. Wade, the Monte Irvin super collector turned me on to your channel. I just watched your interview of Clemente Super Collector Curt Burner. I was very impressed and enjoyed watching it. At the end you discussed MLB’s need to retire 21. Let me preface this by saying I’m a Latino male, Roberto was my childhood hero, he remains my moral compass’ true north, and my son’s middle name is Clemente. Obviously I’m passionate about Roberto. That being said, I don’t want to see #21 retired. That honor belongs to Jackie and Jackie alone. By retiring #21 you will “Larry Doby” the significance of the number 21. Instead, Roberto should have his own unique tribute. I believe the only player to be permitted to wear the number 21 are the Clemente award winners. The 21 on those players jerseys should be the 1971 Pirates font and should be black with mustard yellow trim. That way the number stands out and is a living tribute to Clemente’s humanitarianism and athletic prowess. Every time someone asks, “Why is that player’s number different from all the others?” Roberto’s story is retold and honored. He was transcendent player and an amazing human being. Let’s give him a special and unique tribute he deserves he deserves that.
Thanks I’m traveling to Pittsburgh for Clemente Day. Roberto Jr and I have spoken many times. I’m sure I will speak with him while there. I’ll pitch the idea to him and see what he thinks. I’ll let you know how he responds.
Nice grade on the redheart Harvey K. Love 70 Reggie Kellogs. The 55 dh are so nice & three cards with decent grades. Love the Dickey card and all the gear....
Great reveal Dan! SGC definitely does the best and most consistent job! The doubleheaders are such a cool set, it’s shocking more ppl don’t collect them. I have a Groat but don’t have the heart to fold it, haha.
Great reveal, Dan. Such a fun mix that you packed into this submission. Hard for me to pick a favorite between the Wood, Gehringer and Dickey. (Probably the Dickey -- it's fantastic). Regardless of the "division" it's in, the Gehringer is still a Goudey Heads Up! That Kuenn Red Heart was also a great card. Thanks for sharing.
