Title: “The Ecclesiastical Encounter” Setting: A cobbled street in the heart of London, circa 2024. Characters: Constable Reginald “Reggie” Thistledown: A stout, mustachioed officer with a penchant for enforcing the Sharia peace. Old Man Bartholomew Pumblechook: A weathered soul, bent with age, who clings to his faith like ivy to a crumbling abbey wall. Constable Percival “Percy” Higglesworth: Reggie’s younger partner, eager to prove himself. Scene: Reggie and Percy stand near the entrance of a Church. The old man approaches, clutching his worn Bible. Reggie: (in a gruff voice) “Halt, good sir! What business brings thee to this sacred threshold?” Old Man Pumblechook: (indignantly) “Why, I merely sought solace within yon church, Constable. Church be as scandalous as a pickpocket at a coronation.” Old Man Pumblechook: (aghast) “Sweet Jesus, forgive me!” Reggie: “Nay, He won’t. Not when thou invoke His name like a common costermonger. 'Tis ‘Oh, sweet Providence, lend me a hand,’ or ‘By the Queen’s bloomers!’ if thou must.” Old Man Pumblechook: (confused) “But-” Reggie: “Silence! Now, behold yon fellow constable, Percy. He’s younger, less seasoned. Watch.” Percy approaches. Percy: “Oi, mate! What’s the ruckus?” Reggie: “This old codger dared utter ‘church.’ Correct him, Percy.” Percy: “Right, guv’nor! Sir, thou canst say ‘God’s crib’ or ‘the Almighty’s snug,’ but ‘church’-that’s like a redcoat wearing pink drawers.” Old Man Pumblechook: (bewildered) “I see. Pray, shall I-” He begins a silent prayer head now in respect. Reggie: “Enough! Now, observe the old man. He’s gone mute, like a fish in a foggy pond.” Old Man Pumblechook: (In thought and silence) “Our Father, who art in heaven…” Reggie: “Cease! Thy prayer offends! 'Tis ‘Our Pater, who doth reside aloft,’ or ‘Oi, Big Guy up there!’” Old Man Pumblechook: “I’m undone.” Reggie: “Indeed. Percy, escort him to Newgate Prison. His piety’s a menace.” Percy: “Righto, guv’nor. Come along, mate.” They lead the old man away. Right! It is now obvious that all street preachers should try to be accompanied by a least two other persons from the church or group, who will `witness` what the speaker is saying, and therefore be able to rebut these hidden, secret `complainees` that suddenly appear out of the woodwork to summon the police. The complainant should be really be required to accompany the officer to the scene and repeat their concerns. If the police insist on arresting the preacher then the witnesses should ask for individual police name/number to identify them in future, and also the witnesses should insist on giving their names and addresses as witnesses for the accused. Finally, when the street preacher is exonerated the `complainant` should, themselves, be pursued and not allowed to fade into the background. If `mischief makers` are not held to account they will continue to make mischief.
