Surprising How much the record reminds me of Boulder buff by Glenn Miller. Then I realize they're both Fred Norman arrangements. The Trumpet is not Jabbo Smith but Shirley Clay, Clay is far more impressive on the Lil Hardin session thsn here, but its still an elegant solo
Fabulous Fletcher Henderson. High speedballin' this train with horns supreme and aplenty. Great solos in jazz grand tradition. Armstrong started it and everyone ran with it. Bravo all.
Great swing by one of America's great jazz bands. Great horns with Roy Eldridge on trumpet. I can just see the dancers movin' all over the floor, to this one, oh yeah. Thanks HJ 78.
Arthur Freed, who co-wrote this with Nacio Herb Brown for the MGM musical "Braodway Melody of 1936", revived it when he produced "Singin' in the Rain" (1952).
"Hurricane" was composed by Paul Madeira Mertz who was a jazz pianist and arranger who had first worked with Jimmy and Tommy Dorsey in 1922 in their first orchestra The Wild Canaries. Mertz had been a pianist in the Bix Beiderbecke band The Rhythm Jugglers in the 1920s and had worked in Hollywood on film music from the 1930s to the 1960s. He had played on the 1925 jazz classic "Davenport Blues" by Bix (and featuring Tommy Dorsey on trombone) in 1925 released on Gennett Records. Mertz also played piano on the 1927 Grammy Hall of Fame inductee "Singin' the Blues" by Frankie Trumbauer and his Orchestra featuring Bix Beiderbecke, Eddie Lang, and Jimmy Dorsey. Mertz also wrote "Hurricane" in 1927 which Miff Mole recorded. He was also a member of the Jean Goldkette Orchestra in the 1920s. Born in Reading, PA, he died in Los Angeles in 1998. "I'm Glad There is You" (which he co-wrote with Jimmy Dorsey in 1941) is one of the greatest jazz and pop standards of the 20th century. Mertz deserves a shout out.
Pops is the best. His trumpet and vocal solos defined seminal jazz in the 1920s. Every musician since then owes Louis Armstrong a big debt. A rhythm master. A genius. New Orleans home grown, but destined for the entire world. You know Pops is jamming with the best right now. Showing all how it is done. The most important American musician in history. Bravo.
Hello! I love your videos! Is that a monoblock amplifier you have there? I'm curious, what kind is it? I also figured out you are using the Aurorasound phono preamp, and what is the silver box next to it? Thank you!
Great record, great sound. Thanks for this wonderful music channel. Your setup is really nice and record collection is quite impressive ! By the way, what kind of equalizer preamp is it? J from Paris, France.
