Amuro was right! Patience, perspective changes, and common sense need to prevail. Char was wrong. The crew of the White Base and Nahel Argama (uc 0096) came so close to this. Banagher, Suletta, and Loren are the top best gundam characters that avoided being sucked into war. But they fought with purpose and freedom, achieving a better outcome that Amuro and other characters never had.

The box is stating the possible future for a better world and Mineva's willingness to see the best in others, is exactly the argument Amuro was making. Sadly, more war continues 27 years later as nothing changed. Also, life became so complicates that so much violence had to lead to the correct century. The narrator forgot about gundam 0083.

A marvelous video it really instills hope, i have my own watch list for Gundam but its sadly very long and standard. Origin 79 Cacaroza Island 8th MS team 0080 0083 Zeta ZZ CCA Unicorn(OVA not series) Moon gundam NT Hathaways Flash F91 Then your done Victory is largely unnecessary, F91 is my end point for now because it shows the box worked the EFF has pulled out of the colonies abd they are self governing, for better or worse they are free. If you wanna also add manga go with Blue Destiny, Ecole Du Ciel, Moon Gundam and Crossbone even if it adds into Victory as it cupminates the Jupiter Empire saga thats been brewing since the start of the UC era.

It really is true that hidden gems are the best. This video is an hidden gem. I underscore everything you said and it amazes me to see that you had such thoughtfulness and good eye to catch certain details, from the different background used depending on the time of the scene (weather it is in the past or present) to the appreciation of lines on their faces and the method used by Takahata. Indeed, he is terribly amazing. No wonder, he is my personal favorite director of all times and this film is an absolute favorite. Exactly for the reason that Hipster_Cthulhu and PlatonSkull said. In essence, “small incidental moments of trueness" make this movie a sort of sort of "treaty on children and women psychology.” Thank you for this amazing video. Such a blessing to find it in a completely random way on RU-vid.

1:14:57 I think you're taking Clarisse's character at face value if you consider her throwing the chair at the window as 'out of character'. Miyazaki shows three times that Clarisse can strive to be an active character and strong in her own right, but she is rarely rewarded for it. The first instance is the car chase. You might forget a bit with all the action, but Clarisse took the oppritunity provided by having her wedding dress fitted (The One Time She Would Ever Be Permitted Outside The Castle By The Count) to steal a car and make a getaway. We don't know if she's ever driven this fast before, we don’t know if she's driven *at all* before. Clearly she is desperate, and clever, and trying her best to escape. This is the best possible plan at the best oppritunity afforded to her. But her attempts are met with extreme opposition, a car full of men armed with guns and wartime grenades are suddenly hot on her tail. Life does not reward her for her brave escape attempt and soon she is left on foot, which only gets her so far. Next is the chair moment itself which is in conversation with Fujiko. Clarisse's attempt is with a tool she was given, the furniture of the room she was trapped in, which of course, The Count accounted for. Nothing in that room is strong enough to break the reinforced glass. Thats why Fujiko provides something from beyond Clarisse's prison to free her. It also forms this idea in the minds of the audience that Fujiko is the kind of person Clarisse would like to be, at least in terms of her agency and control over her life. But again, life has never rewarded her attempts to emulate Fujiko. She's been pretty successfully beaten down by The Count, because rarely does he ever slip up and provide her the tools necessary to flee him. She's an elephant tied to the stake, so it's no wonder she comes off so passive and afraid 90% of the time. But Miyazaki does a beautiful thing by showing us that 10%. That part of her that still tries sometimes, despite how often she is punished for it. And that third time is the reason why Lupin is still alive. Because she risks herself, the most precious of the Count's tools, and ends up buying Lupin a lot of needed time. The Count responds to her success by attempting to erase her mind itself by doping her on drugs. Clarisse is not weak and she never was. The Count only prefers her that way and sees to it that he gets what he wants. I think the very premise of this plot, and the antagonist necessary to create it, is why Miyazaki was perfectly alright with not making him sympathetic. In order for this plot to work, The Count has to be oppressive in every sense of the word.

While I generally really enjoyed Turn A, it does feature some of Tomino's common idiosyncrasies. Way too long and bloated story, giant casts where some of the characters just end up fading into the background without resolution to their subplots and ideas that go nowhere. Realistically the series could be half the length and still tell the same story. Why even bother doing the Loran crossdressing thing when it led to nothing? Why have Sochie engaged to that guy when his death didn't seem to leave much of an impact on her? Why present the Diana Counter forces (on Earth) as so incompetent that they never felt like a threat to Loran and his mustachioed machine? Overall though I have to emphasize that the show is good, very good, and it is certainly worth a watch.

UC Gundam really is depressing when you think about it. And if you accept Turn A as the future version of it (which I think Bandai will announce some day that Turn A is just a possible future) it makes it all that more depressing. Humanity never got it's crap together and just ended up being so destructive that they were driven to a near apocalypse that erased their whole history. Despite stopping them from repeating it in Turn A, it seems like humanity is still primed to do so. I say this coming from Macross, which is a much more hopeful series. Humanity in that franchise had been through many of the same things as people in Gundam, but in Macross humanity came together and found peace among themselves. By Macross Frontier, they were thriving and sending out generation ships into deep space. But the one unifying thing in Macross is different people (humanity and the Zentraedi) finding commonality in something beautiful, which took the form of music. The people in Gundam never seemed to find commonality and always fought over their (often petty) differences.

I love the weird logic of these movies because it really does feel like a kid coming up with a pretend game. Of course she's living alone in kindergarten, of course a panda can be her dad and its cub her baby, of course the whole town can flood and it just looks pretty and opens up new adventures. It's a child's imagination.

Good that you covered a lot of different aspects of the movie. It'll be useful once the blu-ray comes out. I think the movie's focus on art itself and the message of not getting stuck in it is really important as I try to think about what we should be taking away from anime and video games that interest me.

When I watched Unicorn I thought the whole time that Laplace's Box was some reference to the concept of Laplace's demon and that it would be some kind of infinite energy device or thermodynamic super weapon. As the series went on I was thinking "What could it possible be to, narratively, justify all this attention and death and violence. I can't imagine what it could possibly be that I won't be disappointed". Turns out the Unicorn writers are far more creative than I am because they absolutely justified it. I cried when it was revealed what was in the box. I cried watching this video.

I always wondered Why the hell Amuro and Bright are keep serving a faction who despises them, feared them, and even treated them badly? The Feddies did nothing at all to helping the AEUG to fought against the Titans and Neo Zeon, forcing them to fight bith of them on their own or had to reliying on Karaba. They're only care about their own stuffs as they're letting the colony dropped on Dublin, a city full of civilians and fine with it as they seeing it as an efficient way to control the populations, forcing people to immigrates to space colonies (which is ironically the exact same thing Char trying to do), and directed the dropping colony to the populated area instead of somewhere empty or sacrifing their base to save people. They're only care about their own face and image by deleting the entire data and records of GP Project, leaving the EXAM (and possibly HADES) incident unrecorded, abandoning all of the Titans images, which is a squadron they themselves formed to hunted Zeon remnants, trying to covering up or destroying the Laplace Box from revealing it to the public, and even changing its contents, and somehow managed to makes things unchanged despite the box is opened, resulting all of the efforts and sacrifices Banagher and Mineva make become in vain, and even deliberately didn't telling Bright that they've captured and executing Hathaway (AKA Mafty Navue Erin) first. They didn't even gave the Spacenoids a right to govern independently, and even heavily rejected Newtypes existance by creating the multiple Newtype eliminating machines. But at least Sayla, Kai, and one of the former White Base crew, Oscar Dublin are aware of that. If Amuro and Bright still think that the Feddies still can be change, unfortunately they're wrong, as they got collapsed and disbanded in UC. 218 after losing influences due to the multiple conflicts and corruption.

Mmmm... I mean, I like the video. I also agree with your point. But I don't understand why did you picked those two anime examples which I do think work pretty well even without the metaphor than others where the metaphor is not only more important than the consistency of the plot, like in Kafka's work, but are in a way indispensable to appreciate the show. I feel it would have been better to talk about FLCL, Ponyo, Perfect Blue, Angel's Egg, Roujin Z... Works that can afford "plot holes" because they are not that committed to the narrative than to it's... meaning? (Maybe just transmit some feelings) and still manage to work. Not to everyone, but at least for some.
@Nyard
@Nyard Год назад
Good point, but I wanted to pick shows from the Trigger/Gainax lineage that are reasonably similar to Darling in the Franxx to highlight how I think they also broke some narrative rules with regards to verisimilitude to emphasize a thematic point. But this was my very first video, so I feel like my argument was a bit shaky at this point and I could flesh it out better nowadays. This discussion has come up again a few times during the course of the Nausicaäst and there I think I had an easier time phrasing things.

Laplace's Box was a red herring to distract you from what really stopped the Zeonic conflicts. The most pivotal moment in history for the UC was when one man: Suberoa Zinnerman Did the hardest thing that any one man could ever do with his life> He gave up on the memory of his dead daughter for the sake of his living one. When it hurt him more than anything else he liberated the world's most powerful woman From life as a slave.

I saw this movie on a first date a few years ago in an outdoor cinema in the wet season and was fully immersed in the island dwellings and nature of the movie haha. It's a big anprim movie. The man is really belligerent about living on the island and keeps trying to escape, but I remember this really powerful scene where he is trapped in a cave and escapes somehow? I think that was the first moment he felt catharsis and joy on the island (other than finding food.) This, alongside the man's bird-watching to me, felt like he was slowly learning to love the island. And after the cave scene, the man seemed to momentarily forget about escaping the island and was just trying to survive. This buildup to the death and rebirth of the turtle, to me, made the transformation of the turtle more about the man finally loving his life on the island. I guess you could say it's a "romance with nature" movie!
@Nyard
@Nyard Год назад
I can totally see that. And I suppose that explains my own more negative feelings as well: Anprim worldview is definitely not something I resonate with, and I always liked the stance Ghibli movies by Takahta and Miyazaki took towards ecology more. However I think your experience with the movie sounds beautiful. Seem like the ideal way to watch the movie.

In fact, I suppose that the power of the box lies in the fact that it could potentially unite all spacenoids up against the Fed, since they has been suffering from the Fed for nearly a century, by notifying them the legitimacy of their autonomy by the constitution as well as the Fed has been deliberately violating the constitution. Due to the greater population of spacenoids then people on earth, once excessive number of spacenoids unite to overthrow the Fed, the war will be of greater magnitude than UC.0079.
