The phrase, "burn the midnight oil" originates from the use of lanterns that are fueled by oil. Before lightbulbs, if you needed light to do your work, you would need to light the lamp and burn the oil.
Data was around humans for 21 years, 19 of which he was in Starfleet; seems both like he was pretty socially retarded until he met Picard, and then really matured in the years Picard helmed the Enterprise. That and/or Data first-season non-Picard TNG characterization was crap🤷♂
I like how much attention they paid to reproducing all the details of the season 1 Enterprise for this episode. Even the crewman in the background wearing the "skant" uniform that disappeared almost immediately as soon as the series started
I was on the floor laughing the first time I watched Data do the lingering turn-away. It's almost 4th wall breaky but I didn't care because i was laughing so hard XD.
A. Wardrobe malfunction. From the beginning Data was Lt. Commander, the Operations Officer and the Second Officer (third in command) of the Enterprise. Lt Cmdrs are addressed as "Commander" all through the series. B. He does say "etymology".
How can Data be in four of my ten best tv show moments!? Gosh, such a great show. Everyone can appreciate this series if Star Trek. Guaranteed. Each characters development is second to none other! (Until Dune is streamlined, anyway)
xd this is so perfect i need to make this into an analogie for the new picard series to patric steward in a letter - im also exited so much about generative ai they can bring us so much more of this content or all the parts not shown in the series o3o i wish there could be endless star trek TNG x) i love this :3
Data ran a psychological program in order to cajole Picard into reviewing the files with him. He subtly made Picard feel discomforted, he knew based upon past experiences how Picard would react.
No wonder real nerds and autistics alike were onto TNG and left the big bang for vapid half wits grandmas and those dime a dozen semi attractive girls that wear eurkle glasses and say "I'm a nerd, I'm so awkward, I love Sci fi.. Can't you tell by my baby Yoda and groom collection that my online fans sent me!?!?5<÷'; Data > sheldon
Actually, it wasn't petroleum that was referred to in the original statement. The oil would have been taken from pine trees, or animal fats and tallow/wax. Petroleum wouldn't get wasted on lamps inside a house, it was safer to use paraffin.
This episode kind of annoyed me. This kid was like... 12? But had the brain of a 7 year old. "Duh why building not stay up? What gravity is?" Then pretends to be an android.... like I would have thought Data was awesome as ayoung kid but I'd also understand he wasn't human, I also understood the basics of gravity by 5.
0:55 That's got to be once of the few instances of Brent Spiner breaking character. TBH, that has always spoiled this scene for me. I'm surprised they didn't try to get another take where he doesn't startle. But I'm guessing they were probably very restricted with the time they had with that child actor, on account of the child labor laws.
When data was being made was there no room in his databanks for a list of idioms? And at any point in the series Data could download such a list and avoid all these awkward, albeit funny, situations he finds himself in.
