Both cut their teeth on this kind of music. Look how happy they are playing fiddle runes. Billy looks more relaxed than he did in NYC. FELT LIKE BILLY WAS TRYING TO KEEP UP THE FIRST TIME and why wouldn’t you feel that way. He was pushed by Chris in NYC you could tell it was like ok show me what ya got. To Billy’s credit later in the Theo Vonn podcast he mentioned the NUC show and felt like he was “ok now go play with this guy the GOAT “ He said he didn’t think he belonged in that situation but damn it through all the pushing he got Billy played Telluride with Chris. I really believe he got a lot out of playing with the GOAT the first time. Excellent impzrov players and I hope they play together more.
I was fortunate enough to be there that evening. I’ve been to literally hundreds of shows and Trey made sounds with a guitar that I’ve never heard from anyone else ever while playing. Dude is on another level.
Not sure who keeps up with who in this improv stuff. Seems like it would be Chris following Billy. You never know what Thile is going to do or exactly where he’s heading.
They played these 2 in NYC in Feb. Totally different this time. Billy looks more relaxed this time (who wouldn’t). Also the tempo a little slower. Still bad ass though.
Ever since billy started studying music theory I love the depth hes finding. Bad ass. I joined the same guitar school he's attending. Algorithm based learning is the shit.
Not a contest folks. Both are monster players. Look up Billy on Theo Vaughns podcast. He talks about playing with Thile in NYC in February. Says he’s a player (and a damn good one) but admits Thile is a Jedi master and he’s right. I’ve listened to Thile for years and he’s the best Mandolin player I ever heard. Technical ability not of this world and improv skills to match. It’s a long way back to second. Billy has gotten a LOT better since the basement tapes with green shirt guy. Fantastic flat picker. Both have thousands of hours of practice under them.
He HAS to step it up. Otherwise no chance he stays with Thile. He’s on another planet. Looks like Billy feels more at ease the send time. They both love to play grass. The grins on their faces tells everything.
Almost like he’s not trying. To be honest they have thousands of hours with those instruments in their hands. Maybe not as many for Chris. Obviously a prodigy if your kicking studio players asses in your teens.
Nicely done. Chris has a clip on microphone, I think for the mandolin, (someone correct me if I'm wrong), and Billy has his guitar on high, perhaps to share the microphone with the taller Chris. It all works out, love the harmonies.
