Jazz drummer from Basel, Switzerland, Alfio Laini records drum transcriptions from modern stars (Nate Smith, Jojo Mayer...) as well as from the greats of Jazz (Max Roach, Philly Joe Jones...)
He also puts videos of his own project, "Fifi's Spaceship" and some extracts of his concerts.
Those trio jazz albums that Gilmore plays on are such a goldmine for vocabulary. The guy just looks at the drums differently than everyone else. Literally everything he plays is worthy of being transcribed.
Hermoso trabajo!!!
Unbelievable! Very good playing and transcription, not done in a blink. The first time I heard Elvin live I sat a few meters from the club stage. It was like getting tabasco in my ears. What a sound and what a ”wide” and almost abstract phrasing! Over 40 years later I keep coming back to him as the very unique player he was. Coltrane of course and the many Blue Note records but also quite a few of his own recordings, both vinyl and CD. I can mention Dear John C, On the mountain and The truth live at The Blue Note. He also recorded with John McLaughlin (After the rain) in the ’90s. I actually got to meet and talk to Elvin when he played with his Jazz Machine here in Gothenburg, Sweden 1984. My friend knew the bass player and we were in the back room. Very nice meeting and the band boy from Germany came with three big glasses of beer and a bowl with ice cubes. Elvin put the ice in the glasses and drank all three in a row. Minutes later he started the second set with a brush solo.
That’s of course a very difficult question. Unless you have the chance to get a gig with a very succesful band or artist, you have to find your balance. Right now, a important part of my incomes comes from teaching drums, and the rest from gigs. But this balance can always change with time!
thank you for inspiring me dawg im a senior in high school and i often feel unmotivated to practice cause i dont have anyone to push me but this stuff really makes me dive deeper into music ❤️
For me too, finding little challenges like this is the best way to keep me motivated in my practice. I have a list of riffs/ solos parts to learn. The best is to choose some that are hard enough, so you have to spend time playing slow and finding your way through the challenge, but short and easy enough, so you can kinda play it slow in one practice session. A couple of bar from this solo can be perfect!
Thanks a lot! It’s a tough solo indeed, but I do think that it’s actually easier to transcribe than his solo from 2022 for example. That one has more intricated rythmes and uncommon vocabulary, where as this one is more challenging technically, but uses simpler vocabulary (doubles, singles, grouping of 3…) The 2022 solo is gonna need some time to transcribe haha…
Aah indeed that’s a good idea. I thought that it was clear enough on the video, since he’s almost only using doubles or singles, but I will add it to the PDF
Hi everyone! This video is a little different than what I'm used to post, transcribing this monument in metal drumming Mario Duplantier, from the band Gojira. Write a comment if you want more of this style and of Mario's solo! And don't forget that you can get the transcription PDF on my Patreon page ;)
