There is an amazing coincidence, you could call it, with the story of the king and the "lisp" however. The Hapsburgs who ruled Spain for 184 years has incestuous marriages that resulted in something called Mandibular Prognathism aka the "Hapsburg Jaw" which does in fact create a lisp among other speech impediments. To give you an idea of the incest that occurred, nine out of the eleven total marriages that occurred among them during the 184 years they ruled Spain from 1516 to 1700 were incestuous. Now, I'm not saying this is the cause of the speech of Spain, but I am saying it is an interesting coincidence and maybe this is where the story originates? It would be interesting to see when the "ceceo" appears in the Spanish language.
I regret trying it in Madrid! When my Spanish sister in law got a “vermut” when we had dinner together, I looked at her weird like I did years ago when she told me about red wine and coke. I had no idea that Spanish vermouth is made for drinking straight unlike the Italian vermouths I have to make mixed cocktails!
If the lisp story were true, it would have been a selective lisp: it only applies to c before e or i and z, not s. This is called "distincion," not "ceceo.," "Ceceo" refers to dialects in which even s has the th sound (probably an overcorrection) and "seseo" refers to dialects that do not have the th sound at all.
True. It's amazing to me that that fairy tale still gets repeated. Although I one contention, at least in Madrid, they also often add the TH sound to words that end in D. Like: Madrith & Davith

Do you get any reactions in Spain when you speak with the Latin American accent? Our family lived briefly in Central America, so that's how I speak it. I'm curious if I should try to adapt when traveling in Spain or just speak Spanish the way I'm used to speaking Spanish?
In Madrid there is a huge population of immigrants from Latino America. So usually people instantly recognize my Caribbean Colombian accent and slang. I also live in the most diverse neighborhood in Madrid: Lavapies, so I have received only positive reactions to our differences in dialects. Just by living here I have picked up some Castillian slang and vocabulary. But I have never adopted the Ceceo as its so different from how I was raised. I would just speak the way you always do.

Here's another slice in 66 or so? , In Mendocino coast a bunch of us were populating a BLM spot that was 5 min drive from big river there was this small pitch black ugly bus that had about 6 pr 7 real cute young girls living in it, people (who were smart) avoided them ,they were called "the witches" what they liked to do was freak trip guys ,bring them in feed them massive doses of acid, then play mind games, jealousy gang ups ,or sent them out with an axe to chop firewood ,then lock the buss and start screaming for help sayin' "Murderer " Murderer" it was weeeird,late I leaned they were"Charlie's girls" we never payed any attention to politics.unless there was a peach march or>? evidentally a guy came along they could not control....Charlie?
