Handball penalty rules need to be revised. I see lots of penalties awarded where there was no unfair advantage for the defending team and sometimes the ball isn't even deflected. I think a lot of times it's hard to determine weather it was deliberate so we need to look if an advantage was gained

This guide misses a lot of on the ground advice. It gives you all the cookie cutter advice that you already know. Being a ref is by far the most abusive job I have ever had and I work retail so I know what I’m talking about. You will be threatened and yelled at by parents, coaches and players. You will be ganged up on the second something goes wrong. I have been followed to my parents car after games (I was in 9th grade) while being forced to take horrific insults. Worst of all I have reported everything to my local leagues and my assigner. Nothing happened. You see to worst part of humanity when you are a referee. I absolutely hated it. For any new or hopeful referees really consider what your getting into. It’s a terrible job because of the extreme amounts of abuse, little hours and garbage pay for what your actually doing.

My first day as linesmen went well. On my 2nd game i met Jurgen Klinsmen playing in a Sunday league! I witnessed him scoring twice and the 2nd goal was a bicycle kick. Didnt even know he still had it in him.

Was there at least 1-2 meters from the player performing the bicycle kick to the player closest to him?

Why can't club linesmen call offside? The ref can over-rule. Some of our club linesmen have more experience than the refs. I can understand maybe not all club linesmen understand the offside rule, which is in my opinion the most complicated rule in all of sports, but some of them understand it quite well. There are 3 major things to simplify the offside rule for volunteer linesmen and they work fairly well. The first rule is that there must be 2 defenders between a player and the goal line, not directly but drawing straight lines across the field. You can simplify this rule most of the time by simply looking at the last defender because the goalie is usually always back there. Sure exceptions arise but you'll get it right by looking at the last defender 98% of the time. The next rule is that offside is determined when the ball is kicked. So you either see the kick or listen for it and if the receiving player is onside when the ball is delivered he/she is still onside if they outrun the defense. They are only offside if they were in an offside position when the ball was forwarded to them. The third point, which is the hardest one to understand, is that a player is only to be called for offside if they "interfered with the play". I think this is the hardest one for club linesmen and assigned linesman alike, it allows for a lot of judgement. "If they aren't interfering with the play, they should be!" But the rule is that it is not illegal to be offside, only to affect the play from an offside position. This part is the most complicated rule in all of sports. So how do we simplify it for youth games? The player is offside if he gets the ball. If an onside player gets the ball no call, even if someone else is offside. It's more complicated if an onside player gets the ball and then passes back to a player who has been offside the whole time but again you'll get 98% of the calls right using this method. They aren't offside if they don't touch the ball. That's not the rule, but it works 98% of the time.

Not only this but since offside can be a match changing decision, and a club linesman gets it wrong, USSF may catch flak even though they did not avow or certify that club linesman. Also, naturally there is no standard of knowledge required to be a club linesperson unlike USSF referees, so there is great variation in their knowledge of the laws.
