Hello! I create content about gaming hardware, emulation, and game development. My hope is that my efforts, in some small way, can help you, the retro game enthusiast, enjoy and play the games you love for many years to come.
You are getting a better quality handheld with the SP, including an improved d-pad, buttons, Wi-Fi, and a more compact design. However, you are not gaining much more in terms of performance. I think it's worth it, but if you want the same performance as the SP with sticks, take a look at the RG35XX H.
I did record at 24fps for the first time. I usually recorded at 30fps. Crazy that you noticed the difference. I use every video to experiment and learn. One of these this time around was shooting at 4k/24. Good eye.
Great review! I love mine, I have the blue transparent version. On mine I have MuOS installed, because it has the perfect synergy with the hinge standby function. Also the custom themes are gorgeous. I use a Megaman Battle Network theme :D
Thanks. MuOS is a great choice on the SP. Definitely one of the better CFWs. I am always reluctant to get the transparent models, but the blue would be the one I would go with as well if I did.
Hey bro so I have a 2017 Mac and when and the launch box I need to click doesn’t even have the photo it just has a white paper photo and isn’t letting me click it do you have any recommendations?
I am fairly certain that this only works on Windows PCs, at least the version I reviewed. If you are on a Mac, you will need something like Parallels Desktop to get it running.
Now that I have MinUI on this, I use it constantly. I take it everywhere with me in a small zippered case that was made for it. I own MANY handhelds, including the Nano and multiple Miyoo Minis. This is by far my favorite pocketable device. Completely underrated. Price went down too. Just perfect for me. Great review!
Very underrated. There is something to be said about the best handheld device being the one you have with you, and since this one is always in my pocket, I have to agree. If I had to pick the most underrated device of 2024 so far, this one would be my top choice.
I like Mod3. Moving all data to the second card and the FTP server are great feature additions. I haven't tried the auto-update, but that's a nice addition as well. Definitely the way to go if you are a fan of stock.
@@muzzworks they're both in there for sure. I took it apart and put it together again multiple times. I installed JelOS and MinUi a couple of times and nothing. Yesterday I was able to get sound from the headphone jack though, but the music was incomplete. So I reset all the retroarch settings via the JelOS menu. It started to work normally afterwards, but now I need to put the speakers back in since I had removed them out of frustration lol. I should have time tomorrow to work on it to see if the retroarch reset did the trick somehow.
What is koriki? Is that a new os? Of so what does it do better over mod3? I’d love to get something like game manuals and possibly download videos to the rg35xx plus too
Great review man; thanks! Absolutely loving my Plus so far - insane value for money. Never tried GarlicOS - how do you think it compares to Batocera? I like being able to have game images etc.
I personally prefer GarlicOS. It's a cleaner, more cohesive experience in my opinion, but I get the appeal of Batocera. Batocera checks all the boxes when it comes to customization and feels very polished at this stage. GarlicOS 2.0 still has a way to go before it can be used as a daily driver on the XX Plus and H.
Hey, I think you were looking at the wrong product! Lol. It's a NuPhy Air 75. Great keyboard, highly recommended. More than just looking good, they sound and feel amazing. nuphy.com/collections/keyboards.
Menu shortcuts like save states and fast foward don't seem to work on mine, while menu + volume for the brightness does work. I don't know if it's a bug from the last firmware
Are you using the retroarch version of the emulators, not the standalone (i.e. second menu item)? I believe the shortcuts only work in the RA emulators. I will update to the latest firmware and check.
I did notice that, but for a beta, the known issues are quite small. To be fair, that stock firmware on the RG35XX Plus is of beta quality at best, as well, in my opinion 😊. I've only played around with it for about an hour, but it seems solid.
It has many options and customizations, similar to ArcOS and JelOS. I would say it is comparable to those. The simplicity and user experience of GarlicOS and OnionOS are better.
If they made a plus size version like the miyoo mini plus , this would be the definitive version of the retro handhelds out there my personal opinion it’s too small for my taste but if there was a larger version it’s literally perfect
I agree, it would be a solid device if made into a Miyoo Mini Plus-sized device. My only issue is that I think the price would jump at or above the $100 USD mark, making it a tough sell for that price. It would be competing with the Retroid Pocket 2S and 3+ (now on sale). While I would probably buy it, I am not sure GDK could sell enough units. If they could release a GDK Pixel Plus at $90 - $99, then yeah, I think it would be a great alternative to the RG35XX Plus and Miyoo Mini Plus.
@@muzzworks true the price would be an issue , I’d still personally buy it it’s worth the price jump but I can understand their fear on bankruptcy maybe they can make a limited edition only one time sale on a plus sized version of a few units and never do it again?
HDMI doesn’t work without lags and the battery dies even off in last than one day, but in general is a good device…and the chipset is really worth for the price, running pretty much all PSP
I have not noticed the HDMI issue, although I have not used the feature much. As for the battery I do a complete shutdown to avoid this issue intirely. I have heard that new versions of JELOS have helped but I have not tested to see if it has. I would say just do a full shutdown once you are done playing.
@@muzzworks i always do, that’s the problem…even shutting down it drains to zero in less than a day…weird…hdmi I tested and the lags are about control response…didn’t tested Bluetooth control yet…but I believe the problem will persist
So, I am thinking there might be another issue, possibly even an issue with your unit. I had mine fully shut down (i.e., Start Button -> Quit -> Shut Down System) and 100% charged in my backpack since this past Friday morning. I just booted it up to see if there was any battery drain. It is still sitting at 100%. Just for your reference, I am using version 20240117. Can you verify that you have the latest update or at least the version I am running?
I personally dont think it is. If compared to the Retroid pocket 2S, Miyoo mini plus or RG35XX Plus, then yearh it is the worse of the bunch. There are some tweaks you can make to it to improve it if you comfortable with some DIY mods.
Thank you. You are in for a treat. I love the yellow colorways. That one did not come out yet when I ordered mine. I would have been tempted had it been out to get that colour. Let me know what your impressions are once you get a chance to play around with it.
I keep thinking about this device, but one silly thing that for some reason bothers me so much is the larger bezel from the bottom of the screen. Whyyyyyyy 😢
@@muzzworks what do you mean by disappear? Is that bezel just the OS not rendering that space, but games would? Or do you mean you just stop paying attention to it? 😂
I think I just personally prefer the Miyoo Mini + because it's really good for PS1, GB/C/A, and SNES. Most handhelds allow you to play Pico 8 but do not have native aspect ratio, like you mentioned. I actually don't mind the letterboxing on the Miyoo Mini +. I also have the grip/case for it, so it fits my hands just fine. If more handhelds had a grip/case, then I'd be more likely to try them.
Yes, for sure, if your requirements are 5th gen and below, the Miyoo Mini Plus is my top choice and recommendation as well. You can't beat the user experience with Onion OS.
Do you think adding electrical tape to the board's D-pad contacts to fix false diagonals would be fairly easy? I would prefer to not disconnect those bigger ribbon cables and just get in and get out lol.... Some users on Reddit say opening this device can be quite difficult but you made it look pretty easy
It is not difficult, as you said, the larger ribbon cable is where you could possibly run into issues. With most D-pad mods, you may need to open up the device sometimes 2, 3 or 4 times to tweak things. Just be honest with yourself if this is something within your comfort zone and whether the risk is worth it for you. I happen to think the D-pad is okay on here. It can be improved for sure with a mod. Just give yourself way more time than you think you need. Most of the mistakes I have made when tearing down devices were made when I got impatient and rushed things. Also, if you are going for it, be sure to use Kapton tape. Good luck!
Out of all the budget handhelds I own ( and I own alot, ) this one doesnt feel as premium. If you are looking for better build quality I would take a look at the ones from ambernic and the retroid. For what its worth I have not had any issues with mine and I have not seen many others complaining about this one. I think its a solid purchase for a sub 100 dollar handheld.
So many, I think I will do a whole video on this. Off the top of my head: • Tower of Archeos • Ascent • Storming The Grandmothership • Porklike • Bomber's Run - the best one, honestly, really great, 20/10. (No correlation between me making it and that score, honest, lol)
I always forget that the SNES was 8:7 natively. Almighty Genesis, yes! Man, I miss the console wars of SNES vs. Genesis. "Genesis does what Nintendon't."
@@muzzworks PC Engine/TurboGrafx 16 is also 8:7, some Sega CD games are also 8:7 Because they have only 256 dots horizontally So 8:7 games should fit nice on 8:8 screen of RGB30
@@DreamvilleMatt I honestly don't think they were trolling, to be honest. You are right about the precision. I have noticed the difference now that these new sticks have been in for a bit.
Great!!! I love it! I honestly havent even figured out how to add games to the favorites file!! I just got mine about 3 hours ago. Can you tell me how to favorite a game?
@@muzzworks thanks so much. I'm blown away how much this can do and all the options! Probably a bit more advanced than I need but I sure love this big gorgeous screen and the fact it's so light weight.
@@muzzworks I subbed. Thanks for helping me. I realize that was a minor issue but I sure couldn't figure it out. There are a few of us who want these and again as I said....sometimes it's a little too much. I did manage to update....and I'm very pleased especially now I don't have to scroll forever so thanks for taking the time to answer a little question
@@JB-js4xi Thanks for subbing, and no problem at all. I'm happy to help out. JelOS is quite intuitive so I am sure you will figure it al out in time. Enjoy!
@@muzzworks thanks for answering my question that I was having a hard time with. Sometimes it seems people used to these emulator systems don't always remember some of us without a lot or tech savvy want them too. Thanks for helping me without being condescending or mean. 🥰
All games you have downloaded in Splore, such as favorites and featured games, are cached on your RGB30 and can be played offline. You can also find all cached games in the BBS/Carts folder in Splore. You only need a connection to find games or load additional games that you have not viewed or played before.
