Ryan, why do you hate Tij so much? (Kidding!) The more I dig into this draft the more I like Lindstrom, followed by Tij, followed by Catton. Just about any of the D-men in the top echelon would do nicely too, so really no bad moves to be had. Just too bad Conroy wasn’t able to pry the 10th pick from NJ’s hands.
If Tij isn’t there at 9 wouldn’t it make sense to just draft the best center that is available? That is the weakest position in our organization I believe? I could be wrong but seems like we have decent prospects at D and the wing.
Sennecke would've been the next player I looked at after Eiserman. There's a lot of good players in this range and he was just outside of the range of players I looked at.
Would not touch him at 9 at all. One dimensional wingers are not a valuable enough commodity to draft at #9. Probably end up with one of Dickenson, Buium or Parekh.
I believe the flames are hoping to get him. They don't need men. They need power forwards. In the past they thought they could draft small forwards and it always failed in the playoffs. Tij represents the future.
If Tij somehow makes it to 9 then it's a no brainer you select him. I don't believe he will be and to trade up for Tij the cost would be too much.. I really like Carter Yakemchuk if he's still there as well.. Both guys mentioned have Calgary connections and check the boxes on what Flames want for the future
It will be very impressed to see how Wolf can do as a starter; including how he deals with adversity on a night where the d core is non existent and he gets shellacked. If he can overcome those hurdles and maybe even win a couple games the Flames have no business in winning otherwise, he will become a fan favorite and mainstay for years to come.
When we signed him fans lost their minds over the last couple years of his deal. Conroy turned the last coupke years of his deal into a first round pick and a huge, 23 year old NHL ready defeneman. Asset managemt is FINALLY a part of this managment's game.
As a Devils fan, it’s good for both teams. Devils get a top 10 goalie and the Flames get a really young D Man who can still improve and has the intangibles to be a solid player.
Awful trade BUT!!! Conroy did all he could.. Let me explain,, Conroy had a deal in place done deal NJ first 24 and Holtz for Marky but when Jersey requested salary retention Flames owners said if we're retaining salary we want more and Devils said go pound sand.. Jersey new Marky played his last game as a Flame but here's what's crazy Ottawa put together a much better package and Marky Declined and Conroy had to settle with Jersey and got less then he could have from Sens.. Marky was pissed and last year he told Flames before season start I don't want any trade talk till seasons end but Conroy's phone lit up he asked Marky and then when markys like fuck it let's do it it blows up in his face.. Thank you Marky for your services good luck in Jersey.. All in all Jersey wins but to Conroy's credit he tried and with a good draft he will have more power next time to tell owners okay back off I got this
This is not a bad trade at all. NJ might make the playoffs next year but Markstrom's maddeningly inconsistent and I don't know if they'll find much success. I will be cheering for them though.
Thanks Ryan, good take on the Flames going forward. Given the circumstances, Conroy got a reasonable return for a goalie entering his twilight years career wise. Additional youth movement is the right direction for the Flames.
This is good to get it done. For too long we've been letting guys walk for nothing and trying to fit square pegs in round holes. I love the direction of the team since Conny took over. Let's get big, young, and turn expiring assets, or assets that don't fit our timeline, into players and picks that will. I'm just as excited for Bahl as for the first. Here's hoping he seizes the opportunity and establishes himself as a top 4.
I think 99% of fans have forgotten Dan Vladar is 25, the magic age for goaltenders. We have the coveted 25 year old back up who has earned a chance, in my opinion. Just in time for Wolf to back him up. Vladar is 25. That is good.
Markstrom had to go, and Conroy had few options with a no trade clause. Flames are getting bigger, and younger, with Miromanov, Bahl, and probably Klapka coming in. I like it.
Defence definately needs to be propped up. It might be too early to spend a lot of money on a premium player or 2. A couple of decent "rentals" might be the best bet for now and save some money till the rebuild is more defined. Goalies? I dont have a lot of faith in Wolfe. I wouldnt be betting the future on him. Vladar has good potential and Markstrom is probably gone. Vladar and Wolfe? Kinda weak i think but it looks like they have to give Wolfe a shot to see what he can do. Forwards? Oh my. What a tangled web. Hubies contract means that he is staying. No one wants that contract. Kadri is a wildcard. He is moody so he could rebel at any moment and demand a trade. Sharangivic was a steal so give him another year to show if he can keep it up. Kuzmenko i would keep to bolsterthe powerplay which really needs help. Coleman i think is unhappy. He might want to go. Backlund is staying. Pospisal is staying. Mang? I would like to see him stay with Backlund. Hunt? Hit or miss . Ok but not really needed. Duere is expendable. Coronato,,, not ready to provide much impact. Keep as a prospect. Pourier,, not good enough. Wont be. Trade him. I have to stop there,,, its getting too depressing. Its a mess.
Flames need to rebuild and Conroy is in the perfect position too.. We need to nail this 2024 NHL draft and next season look to move players again like Kadri,Coleman,Mangipane and Backlund.. Name Weegar captain going into 2025 and keep drafting well.. 2026 we have a legitimate chance at a generational talent (Gavin McKenna) and hey if you lose the lottery Joe Iginla could do. Also think about Landon Dupont and think about the new arena coming bottom line this organization can seriously build a monster !! Patience is a virtue folks we can keep the same shit and get the same shit..Say what you want but last year I was finally entertained by the youth Zary and Popisil keep building piece by piece Flames fans are loyal KARMA owes us for 2004 I believe Calgary Flames will be the team to bring the cup back to Canada 2029 WATCH
Lose , lose scenario for the Flames, if they draft him and he doesn't become a top line player , they will get criticize for drafting the name, if they don't draft him (and he is available) AND he becomes a top line player they get criticize for not picking him and both scenarios the criticism will likely come from the same people in both scenarios. Best scenario for the Flames is Iginla picked before they have to make that decision !

With the 9th pick JEROME IGINLA steps to the podium and selects F Tij Iginla (classy move Conroy) Then Bettman announces a trade Flames acquire 10th overall pick and prospect Dman Shakir Mukhamadulin from NJ devils and it's Conroy's on the podium to draft D Carter Yakemchuk.. Markstroms a Devil !! With there 3rd 1st Rd pick at 28 Flames select Yegor Surin an absolute nightmare to play against and future linemate of Popisil MY GOD!! Pick 41 welcome to Calgary Justin Poirier no his Brother doesn't take the podium that would be to over the top then finally pick 62 Flames go back to Russia and grab D man Matvei Shuravin.. Go Flames Go!!!
