The Angelman Syndrome Foundation (ASF), angelman.org, advance the awareness and treatment of Angelman Syndrome through education and information, research, and support for individuals with Angelman Syndrome, their families and other concerned parties.
ASF is dedicated to helping families, care providers and medical professionals arm themselves with as much helpful information about Angelman Syndrome (AS) as possible.
This was a great deep dive into anxiety and behavioural issues in Angelman Syndrome! I loved the open discussion about medication and their side effects, and what seems to work best for AS. Likewise, the discussion on behavioural strategies for sleep and challenging behaviours was very useful. Wonder if the written Guideline on Anxiety was published, as it could be very useful for knowledge dissemination among healthcare professionals worldwide. Thanks ASF for organizing this webinar!

Summary: In this video, Erin Sheldon explores the importance of modeling writing as a means of communication for students with limited verbal skills, especially those with Angelman syndrome. By using various tools like predictable chart writing, category systems, and personalized books, students can develop their communication skills, increase repetition, and retain information. Additionally, Sheldon highlights the importance of making writing a fun and enjoyable activity by using different colors and involving students in the process of creating the chart. The approach is centered on modeling and support to build a foundation for students to participate in writing activities in the future. Finally, Sheldon encourages teachers to start brainstorming and engaging with their students in this shared writing activity.
Summary: This video discusses various strategies for engaging children in reading, particularly for those with Angelman Syndrome or other disabilities. The speaker emphasizes the importance of creating a strong foundation of motivation and providing access to books that are cognitively and physically accessible for each individual child. Personalized books and digital access can be particularly effective tools for engagement, and wordless picture books and repeated readings are recommended to help children become pretend readers and eventually read independently. The video also covers assessment tools for early reading skills and the importance of addressing the "why" of literacy for children with Angelman Syndrome to support their communication skills. The presenters of the Core Set 2: Shared Reading Part 1 video give advice on selecting books for children, recommending books that feature the child or their interests and using tools like Google Images and Tar Heel Reader to find books on various topics. They emphasize the importance of finding engaging books for children, such as a book about worms that one child found captivating because it was "disgusting." The speaker also discusses using apps like Tar Heel Reader and reducing the number of words used to describe photos for children who get overwhelmed easily. Additionally, she encourages parents to post any questions or difficulties with engaging their child in the Facebook group to problem-solve together and provides information about the communication series available on the Angelman website.
