Please don't let this ruin your aspirations. Check out Christian Munzner, he's a metal guitarist with focal dystonia who learned to play without his middle finger. He is incredible. Take care.

I'd really like to learn how to play an upright bass. It seems fun. I really like how Mari from the band The Tri-Tones handles her bass like a pro for their oldschool Rockabilly sound. Watch TV Hop from them!

You have raised a good point, Dr. Kertz. During high school and college, I usually had to play on more than one double bass. I was also fortunate enough to have a teacher who told me that I should be, "...able to play any bass I pick up." He helped me learn this by paying attention to string length more than any other factor. I've played on very large double basses that were set up to have a 41-1/2 inch string length (very comfortable). I've played smaller basses with a longer string length. So it essentially boils down to string length over bass size.

Thank you for posting this important topic, which bears discussion. My first main concern is why not teach correct thumb position on the fingerboard? Simandl Book I (Carl Fischer) shows beautiful illustrations of Fred Zimmermann's perfect hand position on the neck, If one is taught to play properly, then hyperextension can be eliminated before it happens; thus, reducing the likelihood of injury or pain. When the thumb is in the correct position (usually just opposite the 2nd finger or somewhere between 1st and 2nd fingers, depending upon the individual's anatomy), the shoulder and elbow are relaxed, allowing the larger scapular muscles to do add weight and do the work so that the fingers can function properly and that shifting itself becomes smooth. As a final thought, pain is the body's signal that something is wrong. If we hurt, we stop playing for a while - be it an hour or day. Medications and injections, among other remedies, only mask the problem hidden behind the pain.

From the sound of it, Wayne Shorters idea of improvising is the only way. Composing in the moment. Anything else is premeditated and not improvised.

Randy, straight to the point, clear and can be stored for future comparisons, too. (Hope I will never need it). When the top of the finger joints grow a ball that hurts when pressed, does that suggest relation to nerve, muscle or anything related to arthritis? Can it be treated, stopped, or reversed? I live in London, UK and the National Heath System only cares if you are dying. Do you recommend I see some private practitioner?

Hi Randy - Great video. Thanks for this information. Have you had any experience with trigger points when working with musicians? A couple of years ago I had some severe pain in my bowing forearm (I hadn't been bowing for a long time). A physical therapist told me about trigger points and was able to resolve my issues with targeted massage over 3-4 sessions. I had never heard of trigger points and had I not experienced myself, I would likely have been kind of skeptical. I was pleasantly surprised by the results and followed up with a massage therapist working on some other parts of my aching, aging body. Thanks again.

That development of a theme is something which reminds me of Beethoven, which could develop complete symphonies from two notes.
