Just what I have been looking for. I see DLG flyers on YT with string on their antennas and say there's a thermal over there. Now I know what they are doing. Thank you for taking the time to post this video. I'm sure it will help me find more thermals.

I see sure the blind man to his deaf dog..... I airways wondered how to find thermals with such a pole set up.... Now I see thanks... But it's like watching paint dry could have user some narration and thoughts

Sorry, how is this helpful? Streamers move and that means anywhere on the right hand side of the pole is a thermal developing? Where on the right? This is in slow motion, and a thermal is apparently developing for 5 real time seconds and then it's gone? Streamers change 90 degrees and the arrows don't change?

Watch at 2x speed, very helpful to visualize wind and thermals. Thanks!

GREAT, as a beginner in thermaling this is the first time I actually SEE the air dynamic of thermal activity, velocity vectors an all this 'theoretical' explanations get REAL, thank's a lot!

Interesting visualisation, was this taken in the northern or southern hemisphere and did the streamers back or veer during the sink and lift phase?

43 degrees north latitude... If you watch the entire video the wind was steady blowing from the northeast to southwest... Most thermals going through were just off to one side or other with one giving a glancing blow going by the thermal flag pole as you can see the streamers rising and pointing in an upward position particularly the top streamer... As thermal moves past, with the 40 foot pole shows the different layers of air interact with the streamers... Streamers point toward the direction of the thermal as they move past the area... At some point I do plan on filming more and get better indications on film...

thanks for your explanation. Wishing you well with your next film analysis. Great work.

I learned something about catching low altitude thermals here. Thank you for sharing this.

I was trying to show the different layers of low level air and the effect thermals have on the air... I hope to make some more as this was my first attempt on filming the setup... I have some other ideas I would like to try... Glad you found it useful...!

I'll practice with my UM radian and regular Radian. I have a 4 meter glider coming, but I don't know if there's enough lift at the ground or 10 foot hill to find lift. I'll have to motorize it I'm pretty sure.

this is awesome. how do i build one of those? is it like vhs mylar tape on a 16ft fishing rod? or somthing similar?

They are very tall poles... I am using thermal ribbon as the streamer material... It is Mylar in 4 & 12 inch width for use in thermal label printers and comes in rolls... 40 foot pole is being used with 40 feet of the 12 inch mylar on the very top and the streamers under that are made up of the 4 inch mylar... It kind of reminds me of a musical note... The thing to do is to crumple up the mylar as much as possible and then unravel it back out... It keeps the mylar from twisting around itself causing issues... You can find thermal ribbon on Ebay and will last your lifetime with as much as you get and really isn't too expensive...

@@laurionk awesome I have Flown rc gliders for 4 decades mostly fly power planes... With gliders I follow vultures have about 6 gliders and so have not bought a bird of time.... Plan built a bird of time when I was 10 years old but only free flight glide Thai one never got altitude ever with it..... Bought a foam 6 ft span bungee launch and done fairly with that.... Longest flight so far was a 22 inch span cheapo ebay badius electric power.... Got about 45 min flight without power after getting approx 250 foot altitude..... Cost of that one was like 20 bucks with radio and all needed.... Have an aspire.... Once I handed the radio to a 14 and old girl after showing her with my hands on her hands on controls... For about 10 minutes.... Then I handed her the radio and walked away... ( trying to build some confidence in her as she was kind of abused by her parents) anyway she did fairly well... Flew fine and actually didn't lose much altitude even though she did not know anything about thermals except that I told her to circle if it's climbing then search for lift once it's not climbing.....

Interesting, but a bit of commentary would have been nice....I am always on the lookout for videos discussing thermal development
