Ultra trail runner in Texas. Helping you run , lift weights, and do burpees more often. I review running shoes, trail running gear, and weightlifting equipment.
I participated in Grindstone 100 miles a few weeks ago. I was disqualified at 89 km since I broke the cut-off (it was a surprise since I did not know there was a cut-off at that point). I was among the people who were waiting for water and drinks at the aid station 3. There was nothing there to drink or eat except some candies. Luckily I left earlier and managed to pass 53 km (56 km) just 3 min before the cut-off. Many people behind me never made it. When someone said that people were waiting for water and they should give them at least 10 min., the staff at the aid station rudely said no. Since the detectors were installed after the aid stations we had to run through the station without taking any water or food. Luckily I had a crew waiting for me, but there were guys behind me who made it just 1 minute before the cut-off and didn't have a crew, they had to continue without any food or drink. They did not even allow the people to return after passing the detectors so they could fill up their bottles with water. The next cut-off (at 77 km) I made half an hour earlier, I thought I was safe, so I took a 20-minute rest and finally ate after not eating for more than 14 hours. But I did not know there was a next cut-off where you had to do 11-12 km of super steep climb in just 2 hours. In conclusion, there was no drink or food for all the runners, and many were forced to continue without any food or water. I am from Europe and have done many ultras (last year I did UTMB CCC), I have never experienced such inhuman treatment of runners. I also learned after the race that the distances they provided were wrong (mu Suunto also measured extra kilometers), cut-offs have no logic they give you 5 hours for 21 km of runnable trail and after that only 2 hours for 12 km on steep and difficult one. The goal of organizers was to take as much money as possible but spend as little as possible and disqualify as many as possible. You are disqualified your bib is taken and you can even get a glass of water because only those with bib can. Of 294 runners, only 171 (58 %) finished, and of 35 women only 17 (not even a half) made it. This is the largest percentage of DNFs I have ever seen at any race, this is also my first DNF.
Thanks for the details. I think we ran together from aid 3. I was really surprised by the race management. I think they should have stopped the cutoffs and let everyone finish. I don’t care if qualifying race or not. It really messed me up and took a few hours to get back to normal. The cut off times were too tight in first half of race. It was my first UTMB race which gave me a bad impression. Have a great week!
No just a name for this burpee assigned in the prisons. I don’t think Navy Seals do them. The Marines do bodybuilder burpees which is close. It has no mountain climbers
