Recent stage productions include The Hound of the Baskervilles, A Splinter of Ice, The Croft, Sarah Waters’ The Night Watch, Stephen Jeffreys’ Valued Friends (co-production with Rose Theatre Kingston); Torben Betts’ Caroline’s Kitchen (originally Monogamy); Alan Bennett’s The Habit of Art, Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest, Frederick Knott’s Wait Until Dark, Torben Betts’ Invincible, Emlyn Williams’ Night Must Fall, Terence Rattigan’s Flare Path and the award winning tours of Sebastian Faulks’s Birdsong adapted by Rachel Wagstaff.

I love Philip's performance as Tom Pinch in Martin Chuzzlewit, one of the finest performances I've ever seen. I wouldn't be at all surprised if Charles Dickens had a hand in choosing him for the part.
Me too! I just saw a clip of Darling Buds on TV (never watched it) - and I looked up Philip Franks to see what he was up to, as he is one of my favourite actors. Years ago, I saw him in Greenwich, one very rainy Saturday, about the time he was playing Tom Pinch, with his hair all long (it was his, not a wig), and I called out - awestruck - Mr Pinch! And told him I loved his work and loved him in Bleak House particularly. He was so friendly and kindly wrote, "To Sarah in the rain!", and I still have that page. Such a modest person!
