Excellent work!!!!! I've been wanting to build this one, with a hypothetical finish, like Humbrol HUM82 Orange Linen, or Testors 1184 Yellow Zinc Chromate.
Thanks! I'm sure a glider in these colours would make a very striking machine. I'm sure the Dutch in 1944 would have been delighted to see the Allies arrive in orange planes. Then again, they might have been very conspicuous to German flak batteries aswell..
Thanks! It's probably the most interesting part of this otherwise somewhat generic glider. With just under 14.000 built most of them looked the same with just some minor differences.
@@misjavanlaatum Ikr? Short variant front skids, tailplane struts instead of bracing wires (this one's actually a biggie imo), alternative venturi tube placement, optional wing tip skids, co-pilot moustache style.. There are just so many extra options that could have been included..
Thanks! I happen to have some newly acquired models in the stash that are earmarked for a review. It took a while to get these; I normally try to cover lesser known models first.
Hi, and welcome to the hobby! Built straight out of the box this model (and in fact most models from the HobbyBoss 'Easy Assembly' line) is about as easy as you can get. The catch is that they often have simplified detail compared to more advanced kits, but they look pretty nice nevertheless. Note that this specific build has some extra details and different markings added.
I just did a diy mottling stencil with a large needle and index card. Then I used a Tamiya rattle can. OMG! It's freaking awesome. I have been struggling with the mottling issue for forty years, now it's museum quality! WOOOO WHOOOO Thanks. The rolled up sponge tip is equally awesome on my King Tiger. Again I am so happy, wow! Peace my modeling brother. Keith Kolb USN/Ret
Woah! An actual build video! Such a great little sub. Love the camo. This kit would make for great cutaway interior scratchbuilt hyperdetailing shenanigans!
Yeah, although it was built almost two years ago now. It's become one of those intriguing 'found footage' videos.. 😉 I haven't seen anyone build a cutaway from this kit yet, but there are actually some madlads out there who have motorised it as an RC model (including submersible capability) and with torpedoes that can be fired 😲
Very nice work, your efforts paid off here with a fine display model. I hear this is an older kit with some serious fit issues so I might avoid it, rescribing the panel lines is an exercise in patience, good on you!
Thanks! When this kit was first released it was 'highly detailed' for its time, with the whole Atar engine that could be displayed. Nowadays recessed panel lines are a must in modern releases. It looks like Special Hobby is going to release several up-to-date kits of the Mirage family!
Thanks! And yes, I should have searched for a aftermarket masking set.. The strip-and-maskol method sort of works, but with so many panels it's somewhat tricky to align everything properly.
Thanks! I wanted a bit more colour than the usual green-on-green splinter pattern, so I searched for a bit. This is in fact the kit I got at ESM Houten!
very useful, many thanks. I have a couple of kits lined up for this already. a revell 1:48 dauntless and a Ertl 1:48 viking, that canopy is almost black. cheers
You're welcome! I don't know if it's possible to get a tone that dark for the Viking canopy with acetate sheet; I have never seen this material in that exact colour. Maybe you can colour it with a bath of Future, strongly tinted with acrylic ink. Or spray it with Tamiya clear colors. Anyway, good luck with your builds!
Although I have never tried it, I think it may be tricky to use an existing acetate canopy as the direct master. 1) Acetate canopies are typically very thin and may buckle under the pressure of the vacuum. Of course the master canopy can be filled (eg. with putty) to withstand the pressure, but.. 2) since the heated acetate sheet is made of the same material, it may still deform or even stick to the master as it transfers its heat. 3) A canopy formed over the master will also be slightly bigger, and fine detail from the original may be lost. You could try to make a plaster mould over the original acetate canopy and use that as a 'female' mould, but this is a much more elaborate procedure than the method used in this video. Hope this helps.
I would not recommend brushing it on; the pigment particles will most likely mix with the varnish and then smudge along with the brush strokes. With a sprayed varnish (in light several light coats, and letting it dry between the spray sessions) the varnish mist will settle and stay right on the spot where it is sprayed. Hope this helps.
Quel magnifique petit chasseur!
Thanks! And yes, the PM kit is quite a dog to build. Luckily I also still have the much nicer MPM kit in the stash, earmarked to become a Dutch version!
Very nice, Fokker D. XXI is one of my favourite aircraft. I'm Finnish so that's part of the reason, but it's also a good looking aircraft in my opinion. .I have built Special Hobby's 4. Sarja and have the MPM Finnish version kit in the stash. Unfortunately the Dutch version is not available, I really like the camouflage.
Thanks! The MPM kit is a much nicer kit than this PM kit, but also tricky to find at the moment. Meanwhile, these basic PM kits are getting sold at premium prices. A re-release of the MPM kit would be most welcome!
