Have you seen any long term results on joists that were taped with joist tape? And how many feet do you get out of a roll and the current cost? We were talking about buying some on a pier job a while back but the price wasn't very attractive and we had never used it and didnt really know if it justified the price at the time but that was shortly after Covid. A guy I knew that had been doing decks for a very long time said that he came across two decks that were about 80 years old and said the subframing was still good but said on both of those decks, they used felt paper on the tops of the joists/girders. Thats what they used a long time ago on decks and other outdoor structures before joist tape came out. But the wood treatments that they used then are now illegal because of eco reasons but they were a lot more effective than current treatment chems.
Strip in the rain it’s easier will peel off better use a scraper go with the grain if scraper gets stuck than go in the opposite direction don’t have to force it power wash if still need more use a belt sander or rent machine from Home Depot that’s your best soulution time consuming and labor intensive but that’s the way behr made this product to keep all carpenters in business lol😅
I only hear good things about Martinez hammers apart from price lol. That said...did he keep or return that rear handle ridgid saw? It's on clearance for 175 right now in a kit with a 8 ah exp, rapid charger and bag. As a tool channel i gotta ask any issues you came across?
Alex my former partner still has it I believe. The saw dust port is a non starter for me. Constantly blowing saw dust in your face… I had the gen 1 Milwaukee rear handle saw it’s identical to the ridgid, right down to saw dust port… plenty of power tho !
Hey welcome back brother! That thing looks like a beast. I kind of wonder how their finish hammers compare to a standard wooden handle. I'd probably be in the market for that before a framing hammer myself, but only because I'm not doing a ton of framing work.
It is and ik I was torn between the framing and finish hammers, the M4 looks great but I still think a finish hammer should be wood. The Douglas hammers are pretty sick, that was going to be my other choice. Hope all is well brother!
I have the same saw, an R-4513. Everything that is stated in this video is spot on. I’ve had mine for about the same amount of time. The Achilles heal of this saw is the blade height adjustment. It just never has worked properly. There is work arounds but you shouldn’t have to. Plus, the saw constantly needs tuned for fine woodworking. Great video!
Thanks for taking the time to comment ! Yeah it’s a good starter saw I would say for the price point ! Like you said hard to keep tuned for finish work ! Keep 🔨 bro!
Wow mahogany decks are beautiful! Are you located in the states? As expensive as mahogany is I would reach out to an experienced craftsman in your area to be sure. I have never worked with mahogany, so I don’t know, sorry I couldn’t be more help !
I love the cabot's wood stripper. I used it on my front porch and it worked great. Today, I used the remaining of my jug on my back deck and I ran out of product. My process is applying it with a sprayer and then washing it off with my Ryobi 1900 PSI pressure washer, works great. I went back and bought another Cabot's wood stripper, wood brightener, and Thompson's clear wood seal. I plan to use the brightener after i'm done stripping my deck, but i'm not sure if I'll use the Thompson's sealer or go with another product to seal/stain my deck.
That’s awesome! You will have to comment back and let me know what product you choose and how it performs! Thanks for taking the time to comment ! Keep 🔨
I went with the straight grip for that reason man. Curve grip really sticks. It’ll wear its way in the sleeve eventually and get better. You can wrap the end cap in electrical tape and that really helps it glide out
@@AMAYERICAN yes sir. It’s holding up great buddy. Original head and everything. Kinda jealous that I didn’t go with the all black like yours. Thing looks sick bro. Enjoy my friend 🤘
There’s a carbide cup attachment for a grinder, I believe someone mentioned in the comments of this video, that would be my first try, flipping boards is a lot of work! Never heard of anyone sand blasting but good idea, ik it is expensive though!
I bought the smallest line offered at Home Depot been a few years tho so I can’t say for sure. I think the difference is in the tajima chalk/ dye. It leaves such a fine line, doesn’t scatter like normal chalk.
No laughing on the job site ! Good one Carl ! It was 105 on that day, when it’s hot AF, and your covered in slurry/ dust/ sweat from head to toe…. Questioning where you went wrong in your life to land you in this particular situation…. All you can do is laugh my friend… Curious what you do for a living ?
This is going to be my first time sandind a deck (exterior), this video showed me what I was looking for, what to use, where to rent, and how to use it. Thank you very much Sir.
What size column wraps are those? I have some 6x6 posts I want to wrap in black wraps would the superior 6x6 wraps work or do I need to go with 8x8 wraps?
8x8 wraps for 6x6 posts, pack out post where railing attaches for your screws to anchor into, and wrap the post with zip tap/ butyl tape as the wood treatment in green treat will react with the aluminum wraps if they come in contact with one another. 👍
I don’t know what area your in .. But my company does concrete sawing for $500 .. safe you time and labor.. it would take us 30min to get that done ✔️ … E&S Concrete Coring and Sawing Company LLC… look us up !!
No, maybe Alex did on his channel Swantek enterprise but it’s essentially the same as the Milwaukee saw, dust port is a major flaw, Makita or metabo hpt is where it’s at for circ saws in my opinion. Awesome framers have a great video on the topic
Working on a front porch renovation, completely redoing the deck frame and decking swapping out the posts and I assumed there would be a beam underneath the “box beam” totally surprised me when I did a small cut out and found it was hallow haha. Did you do the same technique for the sides as well or is the front what’s holding all the weight mostly? Planning on doing exactly what you did here but not sure if I need to add some beams to support the sides or just adding the beam to the front would be sufficient. Any advice would be awesome, good video man!
Thanks ! And I was shocked as well, I did add a doubled up 2x8 as well on the sides to help reinforce/ secure to the house. Isn’t necessary unless you have a hip roof though. Advice is take your time, build a temp wall to secure the load. Cannot emphasize adequately bracing and supporting the load enough for safety reasons obviously. Use a level line and bottle jacks to take out any sags. Use structural screws (GRKS) #10x 3 1/8 And just take your time. You can message me on instagram if you need any help! Been doing deck resurfacing for 17 years and seeing as most of the stain/sealer is well bonded.....you should be using a drum sander ! The result is amazing and when you're in business the time saved is quite justified. The orbital is okay for decks that are faded grey or most of the old stain is gone but painted or stain sealed requires a drum sander.
Great tips. Thank you! On a side note, the gates under the deck are probably already sagging because the diagonal brace goes from the top hinge down instead of from the bottom hinge up. From a comment you made, you probably didn’t build them.
Hey pal, you are on the right track. Here are a few things to consider from a company that does about 75 - 100 deck stains per summer. First have the customer remove all their items from around the deck ... ie hose reels and lawn chairs. Clean the cracks between all the flooring pieces with a compressor (thats where the dirt and gummy items are coming from, gumming up the sandpaper.) I would typically strip that deck first day and sand the next. Much of the overly applied existing stain and protector will fall off with a good stripper making your sanding so nice and clean. And yes, always buy loads of sand paper and just return what you don't use (you're returning the sander so it's not like it's an extra tip). The other thing to remember is this is an outdoor deck. 120 is a bit fine. I am usually 80 grit after the stripping of the existing. No need to polish the deck like an interior hardwood floor. Great start pal. You will do well with your conscious effort of improvement.
