Ken Squire always specified a bit on the "Van" when he said "Ernie Err' Van". After Squire, it seems like they always said it like "Erv in". Ol' Ernie Irvan really had some rough early years and suddenly turned into a weekly contender!
Huge crowd, beautiful cars, a preacher blessing the president, black man singing the national anthem at a "redneck sport" to huge applause. What a time!
11 minutes into the video and already been forced to watch three ads… I hope those three pennies were worth a thumbs down. I’m gonna find this race on another channel. A lot of them will go an hour without ads
@VolReed sir, I don't make a fucking dime off this channel. The ads are there because my video has been copyright claimed by nascar and THEY make the money from ads on my videos. I didn't choose to have the ads, I'm sorry you have to deal with that. That being said, adblock is free to download online and completely eradicates the problem.
ALSO- Buddy Arrington officially finished 6th in his self-owned CHRYSLER. He was officially one lap down but what a great effort by the OG independent owner/driver.
First race for Johnny Hayes Racing, entering a Buick sponsored by US tobacco (Weyman and Bruton for this race) which was driven by NASCAR Champion Benny Parsons. Benny qualified 14th scored a Top-5. Pretty good for their first race. They were unofficial teammates to the Hal Needham/Burt Reynolds Owned Skoal Bandit Buick (Chevrolet during later seasons) driven by Harry Gant.
Man, what sponsor coverage teams got back then! Now, nascar/networks are afraid to mention a teams sponsor in case it conflicts with theirs, or they just didn't pay them also. Painted cars were memorable!
170mph...50 years later...better engines, better tires, better suspensions better safety and theyre up to...what 180? Lol that right there is THE problem with Nascar today. They were truly testing limits of machine and man back then...now theyre testing limits of the fans
When ESPN broke out this intro. You knew something big was gonna go down. They used it for the MLB, NHL and NBA Playoffs too. this day was no different. One of the greatest days in NASCAR history.
I think this is one of the last nascar races that was any good. I’m sorry but it’s pretty hard to suspend my disbelief when they are racing a front wheel drive body style. Lumina? Cmon. This is the beginning of the end for nascar imo.
After this race, the drivers wanted to run Ernie Irvan out of NASCAR. At Talladega, Irvan got up during the drivers meeting and apologized to the drivers for his aggressive driving. That very well could have saved his career.
My first race I went to was Darlington raceway, it was 1976, I appreciate these men who made NASCAR what it is today. God Bless them all. I still love watching these historical races, they all raced their hearts out with respect for each other.
If North Wilkesboro ever returns to the calendar with a 400 lap points race, it should be called the (Sponsor presents the) Junior Johnson 400, and the winner receives the Enoch Staley trophy.
Today (Wednesday, September 25, 2024) marks exactly 30 years since this race was held! Happy 30th Anniversary to the 1994 Goody's 500 at Martinsville Speedway! And what do you know, this is the 30th comment on this video!!
