As you can see at 1:30 the lengths were all worked out by just testing. The width I determined from a kayak I have, and is about 70 cm at the waterline and I think about 85 at the gunwales. I tested to make sure I could still paddle given the width. I need to make another video, as i have modified it substantially since then. I am building some outriggers as I sail on a bay that gets quite choppy. The narrow width is not suitable for sailing in large waves.

It's more of a trade knife, a Indians trade . Junk metal caseharden . That is why the natives only sharpen there knife on one side. As the core was soft junk iron. Say About 1820s blacksmithing

the "Whack it With a Hammer" test in the World of Construction and Inspections of said world is known as a "JEEP TEST" as WWII Jeeps came with tools and a Hammer. one holds the Jeep's Hammer about head high and lets it fall on the test item for inspection. when an Inspector, while inspecting my exothermic welds used the "Whack it With a Hammer" test, he told me the Name and Why. and I thought it was so COOL! as no more WWII jeeps or tools are around much he used a 2 lb or double jack Hammer with wood handle for testing. and all my exothermic or thermite welds passed

Get stuck in and do it! I need to post an update video. I have since made lots of alterations, including removing the side flotation tanks (for more internal pace) and adding rowing arms, stabilizers, and a keel for tracking when rowing.

With all due respect, you are repeating incorrect conclusions about historical Damascus steel. It was a crucible steel and was most definitely NOT case hardened as you stated. The misconception you are spreading was likely caused by examination of the depth of hardness by "experts" who don't know that low alloy steels are shallow hardening and will appear case hardened after quenching, especially if they were only edge quenched, partially quenched, or differentially hardened. The Vanadium content of historical Damascus lends greatly to the properties that create this misconception... and I assure you, it's a misconception. And fyi, never swirl a blade like that when you quench: you only worsened the pockets of incomplete quenching around the vapor jacket when you did that; instead, do a casual stab and retract inside the quench, back and forth or up and down in the quenchant to keep oil on the surface of both sides evenly throughout the hardening curve time.

Actually, what I said was "This was part of the process used to make Damascus steel" - meaning carburizing. According to Wikipedia, carburizing of the Wootz steel ingots used to make Damascus blades was done using woody biomass and leaves. Thanks for the advise on quenching.

@@leemelbourne3297 Even if you try to reframe your statement that way, it won't make sense, because they didn't start with a Wootz steel ingot and then carburize it, especially not in the manner you used: they started with iron, biomass, and sand, and created the steel ingot from them, carborizing the iron into steel in the crucible, with the sand on top to form glass during the burn, so at the very least you badly misspoke, giving the impression that you vaguely know something about it, but just enough to get yourself in trouble, as my dad used to say, lol. @@leemelbourne3297 To clarify my reply: Wootz was created in a crucible, liquifying the Iron and the source(s) of Carbon... not adding the Carbon by carburizing diffusion as you stated (at the very least by direct implication if not explicitly)... a completely different process, so your statement was incorrect because that wasn't part of the process of making Wootz. And in order to reframe your statement to a generalization about all processes of adding Carbon, then it applies to every type of steel ever made, so it wouldn't make sense to single out Wootz... unless you were under the mistaken impression (as nearly EVERYONE who talks about Wootz is) that it was made by the process you were discussing. If you read/watch/hear ten thousand things about Wootz from self-proclaimed experts, you'll be lucky to hear five correct things... and the most popular things that get spread are the most incorrect.

I expect the flour burns up to produce more carbon adjacent to the steel inside the clay wrap. And it holds everything together as a paste at the start. I am not sure of the role of the salt - I took that mix from another video online.

Now you know why outriggers are so important on a sailing canoe. I bought a pair of pneumatic wheelbarrow tires and positioned them in the middle of the boat so it's very easy to move around even on rocky beaches.

Do you use the tyres as both outrigger support and transport? That is a great idea. I have actually made many improvements since and need to make a new video to cover them all. I added a set of "arms" to allow rowlocks to be outside the canoe (much like an Angus Row Sailor) and these can also be used to hold some small outriggers I created.

Yes. It was pretty easy. I found the post below on the web and sort of followed it. Though I used a 19mm gal pipe from my local steel supplier rather than the expensive aluminium rod, and I used carpet glued on some well placed timber along the A frame to support it. www.blokespost.com/sailing/how-to-make-a-simple-sturdy-and-functional-sailing-dinghy-launching-trolley-dolly/6095 They are a nice stable dinghy, so I heartily recommend it. If you do buy it then let me know. I need to update certain rigging and such, so it would be good to compare notes with another owner. I dont know of anyone else who has one.

I'd like keep listening for sounds and sending this to another process / service into raspberry Pi. So, this new process if I identify a pattern ( a alarm for example), I'd like turn a light on or something like that... Is it possible?

Yes. You just need to feed the audio into a buffer and keep checking it for the sound. That is exactly how catching a hotword works.

On the expense of high carbon steel, plain high carbon steels are inexpensive, if you can find the right supplier. Tool steel is still costly.

I still have not had a chance to test a deep water capsize since I added rear floatation and removed the side flotation. Getting back into a canoe will no doubt be tricky.

Make sure you have published the dashboard and run the bot at least once in production mode (checked in) to accrue some data. This is case hardening, still used for screw heads, gun parts etc. It’s a very very fine layer of high carbon steel, useless for sword making, but maybe usefull for homemade files or short term use cutting tools, if you cook it for longer than 2 hours. If you want hardness, why temper it? Don’t cook it in the oven after quenching. If you want carburised steel by cementation, you need to cook it for 1 to 6 weeks depending on the thickness of the bar to make blister steel and gain 1% of carbon in your steel. If the steel is low in phosphorous, it becomes a good material for Huntsman crucible steel to homogenize it.

I tested out the tiller lock in conjunction with the oars on the weekend. It worked very well. The tiller lock helps with tracking - keeping the boat moving in a straight line while paddling. Without the tiller lock rowing is very hard, as the boat quickly turns on the spot whenever one oar catches more water than the other.

Hi There. To access the operations dashboards you need an AA_Admin role or a AAE_Bot Insights role. To access business dashboards you need certain permissions over the folder where the bot that generates the data is stored. Actually when the terminal emulator reads it the date is just text. In this case I wrote the output to a text file, so it remained as text. But if you write into an Excel file, then Excel will interpret the text as date if it recognises the date format. Automation 360 has a date type variable, so you could also convert text into date within the automation logic.

So I do a lot of tinkering in my spare time and I'm currently seeing if I can carburize a cold rolled steel rod to give a hydraulic press I'm making just a little bit more rigidity. I was going to school for science of biology as a cookie cutter pre-med route and I can see you are not just doing this to prove to yourself but share your data with others. Thanks man that's what science is but I'd like to make some suggestions should you consider reconducting this experiment. Take your control and change only one variable per experiment. That means, salt or flour, clay for both or none at all, heating both for two hours regardless if one is to attempt to absorb carbon or not. As it stands was it the sodium or the chloride from the salt, was the flour enough of a carbon source since it also is a carbon based life, was there remaining water from the clay that allowed hydrogen to effect the iron, and the list is endless. I think we know where most of the carbon is located within the ingredients but one things I've learned is science is a bureaucracy. No matter how redundant it may seem adding steps to isolate the sole cause of the hardening or if your lucky/unlucky you find adding salt alone decreased hardness but with clay it overall increased. Just making something up at the end to illustrate sometimes data just raises more variables to try, more questions, and most importantly another failed hypothesis allowing us to try try again. I'm not a "scientist" hell I dropped out before finishing my bachelor's degree but during the time I was working on getting paper to say I'm not big dumb I wrote many "scientific research papers" hypothesis, methods and materials, ect ect. I think you may benefit from refreshing yourself with the scientific method and applying it to your work. I hope that was helpful and came out correct. Oh lastly there's hardness testing methods that are cheap and more reliable than a file of unknown sharpness and pressure (precisely) applied. One I'm thinking of is a file set of varying hardness to get a number to log. Not to say what your did clearly worked the file cut half as deep so I am impressed. Anyways, I just wanted to add that Incase it may be helpful with your future endeavors.

Good ideas. As a further experiment I wanted to try the strike test with a 1080 steel knife we made...but a couple of things held me back: 1. I didnt want to ruin the knife (just in case the carburized steel was harder) 2. the knife was only about 4mm flat bar, while the carburized material was about 8mm

I built a sailing canoe about 15 years ago with a lug sail setup , totally enjoyed sailing the rivers but my mast was not good enough after a couple of sails snapped it in 2 , sailing teaches you things you just don’t expect lol as you found out falling into the drink haha give me a good laugh , sailing so much fun , nice sailer you built and you enjoy it , well done .👍

I've ALSO _seen_ the same "Carbon-paste & Steel "wrapped in STEEL FOIL to keep oxygen away just as its used in Forge-Welding Stainless Steel . This allows the INITIAL PRESS to take place with the WRAPPED coupon , allowing a greater amount of carbon uptake . Using the clay WITH the CARBON source, and THEN Damascus-layering it with the NON-Carbon PRE-treated steel , SHOULD make for an INTERESTING final result 👍! Now THAT is something I'd LIKE to _see_ if you're interested in ideas for "possible content" 👍! Enjoyed the Vid ! THANKS! - Chuck .

Hey, have you tested your board with the Micro USB connected to power or does it work without that? I'm looking to build a wife-approved in-home audio streaming system and would like to have as few cables as possible on my audio nodes. The documentation asks specifically for the power to be connected, though I wonder if the GPIO pins provide enough on their own.

@@leemelbourne3297 Well, I just read the product page again and it says "POWER: Micro USB port for powering the ReSpeaker 2-Mics Pi HAT, please power the board for providing enough current *when using the speaker*." So it's only needed when a speaker is connected.

Really like your approach to building your s.c. I built a 14ft canoe during lockdown with intension of turning it into a s.c. Unfortunately it was so heavy when finished I couldn't lift it on my own, so I chopped 4ft of the middle, epoxied it back together and used it as a 10ft canoe. The mistake I made was using 6mm marine ply from a building supply store which was very dense, I still want to make a s.c. but would use 4mm ply instead.

Spot on. I used 4mm and it was plenty tough. Especially if you fibreglass the base. Mine still came out heavier than I wanted, so I am looking into where I can cut weight (the transom is way too thick for eg). I underestimated how much weight paint and epoxy add. I also found that when dropping the sail the boat is completely full with the spars and sail material, which makes it hard to paddle. I will probably remove the side flotation tanks and add a rear one instead, to free up some space for the sail.

@Lee Melbourne I gained quite a bit of weight with for n aft buoyancy tanks. It still made a nice canoe which tracks very well through the water, this is probably due to its weight. I would like to build a Viola 14, but I think it would be too heavy for solo use.

Hi. The bot is actually just doing some random stuff - interacting with an online mainframe, opening a webpage, using a delay, and some message boxes. So there is nothing really to show. But it has some input parameters that are sent by the Google Cloud Function. You can see the Google cloud function code here: github.com/leematthewshome/DialogflowAutomationFunction

Great work. I built a Burmash 14 in lock down here in the u.k. it was so heavy I couldn't carry it on my own! Only solution was to cut 3.5 feet out of the middle and tape it back together. Was a success even still heavily than I wanted. Yours looks much iighter.

Thank you. Yes, I put in a heavy transom as I planned to use an electric motor. But in reality I dont think I will ever do that....so I plan to cut out and replace the transom to lighten it a little. But its all the paint and epoxy that add the weight.
