I like the "non-gradable" idea for colours as adjectives. I think it also applies to shapes : "This table is round" = 这张桌子是圆的 ( Can't usually say 这张桌子很圆 ) Besides colours and shapes, probably this concept also applies to other such categories. … 这本书是红色的 uses a 是…的 construction. But this is different from the "usual" 是…的 construction, which describes the manner in which something was done : 这本书是在中国买的 = "This book was bought in China"
Back again from Duolingo to fill out my understanding of the proper placement of 什么 in a sentence. Thank you. Next video is to get a better understanding of 了!
This is a great discussion of a very important topic. 谢谢老师。 … For 我不工作了 in English, I think we would often say "I'm not working anymore". This "not … anymore" indicates that I was working before, but now I am not working. The situation has changed. Some people say that a sentence-final 了 indicates a change in situation, but I think this is only true if the sentence is negated (with 不 or 没有). If the sentence is not negated, then the sentence-final 了 just indicates the current (ongoing) situation. 我工作了 = "I am (currently) working" [ no change is indicated ]
Good point. That's why I like the notion of thinking of the sentence-end 了 as a way to prompt the speaker's perceived new information. Thanks for sharing it. :)
Thank you for these videos. I am having a difficult time sorting out sentence structure in Duolingo where one thing is in relation to the other. I just could not discern the pattern. I’m thankful for your videos.
Thank you, glad to hear that it's helpful. With a full time teaching job, it's hard to find time to commit to them, but it's a good suggestion that I may consider for the future.
Your lessons are a wonderful compliment to Duolingo lessons. The different font and context helps me to realize I am doing more guessing by context than knowing by real recognition of certain characters.
Good question. Technically you can say it is not wrong. However, when a person uses 这里 instead of 这儿, the person is likely from southern part of China. So they would use 哪里 instead of 哪儿. That's why usually 这儿 and 哪儿 go together, and 这里 and 哪里 go together.
👍 Nice job! You can also make it better by adding 长得 and say 他长得越来越高了。Here 了 goes at the end of the sentence to indicate a change. You can find out more about the sentence-end 了 in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GWqgzO4Tb34.html
