A 50 year old computer technician doing bushcraft on Vancouver Island. "Survive without suffering" is my moto. Unusual techniques that make Bushcraft fun and easy for everyone, no matter your age, gender or experience.
I carry some small packets of Petroleum Jelly, (similar in size to Catsup packets found in fast food joints). When I want to use a piece of Jute Twine as a fire starter or tinder, I cut off a couple of inches of the Jute Twine and rub Petroleum Jelly over it increasing the flammability and extending the burn time.
Shhhhh don't tell no one about one hand opening. I have a master craft box cutter makes sense you would want three point contact while opening on ladders ect still illegal
Reminds me of a fisherman’s vest. But, they are a lot more expensive and usually have much smaller pockets. One word of advice, don’t carry anything hard in the middle back pocket located near your tail bone, only soft stuff. People have fallen and become paralyzed from it. A lot of carpenters keep their hammers there on there belts out of convenience but it’s not a good practice. Power linemen don’t even have a loop there on their saddles because if they fall from height they’re done for.
Yes there is a lot you can get from the land. If you live by the ocean, you can get more! Fortunately on Vancouver Island we have both. Slugs, ew! Suppose I should try them before passing judgment. Oregon grape jelly is most awsome! As kids we used to peel off the outer layers of bullrush and eat the pith, it is really quiet nice.
This list is useful too, what you guys think?: *survivalinnature.com/top-10-best-survival-tactical-pants-for-men?Ru* It really helped me choose the right item 2:18
Hope all is well and you are staying safe. I keep checking back to see if you are active. Looking forward to new content on the channel. This is one beautiful island!
Vib I suspect you could use chicken carcass that you would normally throw out vs edible pieces. How often do run across bears and Cougars that can cause problems in a bush camp? Thanks for the Good videos
Lower the pot to reduce the burn time - less lost heat and more efficient use of fuel ... you really want the pot to be close enough for the tips of the burner flame to tickle it .... :-)
Cool video! Thanks for sharing. We would like to try this fishing activity today too. Where you at in the video? What spot of the river will you recommend? We are also in Nanaimo ^.^
I disagree. I have 2 pair of vidda pro, and the numbers gaiter & smock. All have been phenomenal. Especially the numbers series. Of course they will get burn holes ... they are cotton and polyester. If you don’t want burn holes you really have 2 options (being clothed). Wool or a blend with fr in it (arcteryx leaf might have it). You wear fjallraven for anything but near a fire. Wool is your ultimate bushcrafting friend ... period
Galldang how many salal berries did you pack in before turning the camera on? LMBO I thought I was watching king fu tv for a moment. Lol Also, spearhead against a bear? Good luck with that. Bow staff, now that is certainly an option Good information btw. I enjoy my hiking staffs. Have several and select them beforehand depending on the season and circumstances.
This gentleman completely misses the point. They are TRECKING pants. They are supposed to be comfortable, and provide stable body temp and humidity, etc. The kind of durability he is talking about is simply not necessary. "bushcraft" for him means working in the wild in some form or another. Trecking is movement from point A to point B. See how the tool is different for different purpose? The pants you suggest are horrible regarding temperature/humidity/comfort/movement restriction, etc. You're not supposed to spend your days trecking on your knees.
I seriously question this review...I own two pairs of vidda pros...hunting, camping, fishing, hiking...they take every bit of abuse I have thrown at them and still look brand new. All I can think is he got a knock off pair...because they are the best pants I've ever owned...and I'm a construction contractor.
All along the Nanaimo river....Nanaimo lakes rd to south forks go to the end of south forks and the nanaimo river rd ...runs along the nanaimo river..all sorts of trails going to the river on that road
It is actually pretty small ...so far it has not hindered my keychain at all...haven't tried anything other than the striker but any metal with 90 degree spine should work...it is a normal ferrorod
For hard work, no matter what the work is called, work wear should be used. As ”Heavy duty” pick up trucks would be scrap after some months in a mining pit where mining trucks should be used, high quality Fjällräven hiking pants should be used for hiking, work pants should be used for working.
Hi dear! It was a very nice bushcraft and bivouac session. A cool atmosphere during the footage. I subscribe to your wonderful channel. Cheers from Belgium. David
Too bad about the bivouac, but glad to see you out enjoying it anyway. I moved from Fraser Valley to the Kootenays. Lots of snow here! Loving it though. Keep on keepin' on!
@@vancouverislandbushcraft4879 I bet I seen a gentleman use a bucket with flaps at the bottom worked as the same concept as a box trap I was impressed it actually worked.
@@vancouverislandbushcraft4879 im thinking about coming to nanamo river , do you have any other spots for me to try? also what area are you in along the river? - dawn
