I use various equipment to obtain DX signals from cheap supermarket portables to SDRs. I am also a fully licensed amateur radio operator with a number of rigs.
Nice to see the comparison of the two older Yaesu RXs. They do seem to have done a very similar job there. I've always liked using the FRG-7 but I've never owned, or had the chance to try, an FRG-7700. Thanks & 73.
Great catch! I’ve not heard Peru from my location yet. So far resisted the FRG receivers even though they’ve often sold for cheap. Really wanting to find a JRC NRD-545 but it’s not easy
Unless your frg7 has been modified, the DX position on the attenuation switch actually adds some attenuation. Zero attenuation comes in the Normal position
Clint Great to hear that your old Grundig radio still has it…👍💎! At my QTH I have a radio I wish was smart being operated by an operator who thanks he was :Brilliant…😂! 73! Have a great day!
Clint Great catch on some of the 1970’s to late 80’s serious SWLer’s /Ham Radio operators best radios. I have to wait until fall to seriously try for the tropical band stations, the Tucson sun makes sure of that…😂! 73! And have a great day!
Nice catch Clint & 2 nice sets 👍 - saving up for one of the "Bonito mega loops" will be placing a order next month & then get ready for the import duty & VAT bill 😡 before I get it 😂
Unbelievably quiet background noise threshold. .Was the recording made with the Wellbrook connected Clint or an internal ferrite bar (I suspect the former).
@@OxfordShortwaveLog There are videos on removing the original bettery and soldering a CR2032 or the lithium one the LR2032. Beyond my soldering skills though.
Hi😀A wonderful quality! I can recognize some NDBs, Radio Algeria (252 kHz), Antena Satelor 153 kHz, of course BBC4 on 198 kHz and on 171 kHz - a French language radio and last but not least: Polskie Radio 1 on 225 kHz. I am from Poland, so I often listen to Polskie Radio 1 on LW, even though it also broadcasts on FM, maybe with a higher but not necessarily "better" quality... I always prefer to listen to it on LW. I can recommend to you something interesting to listen to on Polskie Radio Jedynka. Every day, exactly at our local noon: 12.00 , so at your local time: 11.00 am, just after the time signal - there is always a bugle call broadcasted daily from the tower of St Mary's Church in Cracow. To me it has a relativistic meaning, since at present it sounds exactly the same as it did when I was a kid....It's amazing, some things do not change in time, what's really good. Have a listen to it one day! I wonder if you like it. 73!
Hi Clint, lovely radio. It amaze me the stability of the external Beat frequency oscillator (BFO) with the NDBs. On the other hand, very sensitive, specially now that Antena Satelor is not operating at full power. Congratulations!. By the way, if it cross to your search any Tandberg Huldra (specially Huldra 10, 11 or 12) buy it...super sensitive and at the same time, superb real HIFI audio.
I own this rig since 2014 and used previously Icom IC7400 / IC756 Pro-III. To change away from Icom was the bad support. It needs 3 month to fix a simple issue. I had decide me to purchaise a IC7800 or the TS990s. My decision was basicly the modern conecpt and the a frend who recommend me this. Now over the years, i keep it and extend this with zwo loudspeakers and an MC60a Mic that i had used for the TR9000 in my early beginning. The mic works great and somtimes i am on air in SSB too. In CW the filters are very helpfull and some qso's was not possible to do without that. Now, the rig is out of production because they could'nt get all required parts. Some of them are also end of sale. What i miss is a new rig from all the companies. Icoms and Kenwood did not had an new available HF flagship transceivers. TS590 and IC7610 are uncomparable. I don't want to have a transceiver that uses a PC-Mainboard as their basis like a flex-radio. I know the bad quality of the main boards and the parts they are use to build them. And i am a guy who don't like menu digging at operation time. All major funktions should be available as a discrete switch or rotator. I don't want to miss them and in that time i had purchaised an IC7300 too for portable operation. Well, as now , i had not done this yet. Well, in just a few years i get retired....🙂
Thank you very much for your detailed comments. The 990 is the first rig I've owned where I don't feel as if I need to replace it after a couple of years. I think it's the ultimate radio! 73
This might or might not surprise you; But as a lifelong DX'er (40 years) near Chicago, in the United States, I have never once in my life heard anything on Long Wave. Absolutely nothing. I still scan through it on my various shortwave radios as well as my SDR setup, even on the best antennas I've ever setup, LW is stone cold dead on this continent.
Nowdays it's all about making contacts and never about a good voicr qso with someone on the other side of the planet. I dont hate ft8, I just don't see the point. It holds the same fascination as texting on my phone or sending an e-mail.
Hi, i am using icom r75..But now I want some change.I'm thinking of buying a 7300.i am not a radio amateur.i am a swl.i have wellbrook and megaloop fx.What should I pay attention to so that the icom 7300 does not damage my Rx antennas?(like this; The microphone will not be plugged in,internal tuner will be off.)thanks..
I'm not sure buying a IC-7300 as a receiver is a great idea, considering the money it will cost. I don't think it will be more sensitive than the IC-R75. You would have to ensure you never plug in the mic and don't hit the auto match!
That Grundig is a real beauty. Back in the day I would have loved having such a beautiful receiver. At that time I had something just as good though-the Panasonic RF 2200 was just coming out.
Once the ham shack became fitted with the all-mode general coverage tranceiver(s), I never went back to the SWL listening of my youth all those years ago on the portable SW radios; but I did have a few of the "good" ones..😉
I was 11 years of age and would have given my right arm for one of these back then. Thanks for the great video and other videos you have made with this super radio. Timeless !!!
