I remember his first win at fistral those was special times by far better than now a days crowed every where no special secrete breaks its just all about the money now as he said all about the contest and not the surfing.
In my opinion this is still the world’s biggest paddle in. He made the wave and even looks like he stalled/ took a bottom turned on a 30ft face to snag hollower section. Granted Golds wave was steeper and way more hollow but Gold made it (almost said only but you can’t say that on a wave like his, making it to the bottom is very impressive as it is) started to turn and had to bail as the whitewater and wave overtook him. Was it possible to make the turn on that wave or was it too fast. I don’t know only time will tell, but it seems possible the biggest paddle ins will generally be mushier waves because the speed of the drop on one like golds is too fast to ride out speed wobbles or wave is too fast to outrun. Although both might be able to overcome by new surfboard designs.
