A graduate student of mine somehow got onto the floor as the game ended. Coach K did the mandatory line congratulations, then ran over to a ref, literally screaming, “You fucked us! You fucked is! You fucked us!” My grad student heard this from 15 feet away. At issue was the no-call with 11.6 seconds left. The replay shows a clean strip by the UConn guy, and that K had no view of what happened because he was seated behind the play. Hilarious!
I remember watching this as a Tar Heel fan I was still nervous in the first half even as we absolutely blitzed them I feared a miraculous comeback by MSU.
I think this is the only time Georgia Tech ever played in a ncaa basketball national championship game.I do know that this was Connecticut first ever ncaa title win.Okafor as one of the best players on this Connecticut team
gotta be one of the best teams to not win a championship ever in any sport. Miss this team so much, got screwed by the refs against UNC. Hopefully the Illini will get back to this level someday! GO ILLINI 💙🧡
From 1999-2005 the ACC and The Big East were dominating the NCAA as 6 of the those 7 years, the National Champion came from either the Big East or the ACC: 1999- UCONN 2001 - Duke 2002 - Maryland 2003 - Syracuse 2004- UCONN 2005 - North Carolina The only time was 2000 were the champion was Michigan State from the Big 10. I am counting Maryland as ACC as their National Title from 02 came as a member of the ACC, well before they moved to the Big 10.
One of the only times I can remember a Duke team choking and succumbing to the pressure. Most Duke teams would win a big game in which they had a 73-64 lead inside of five minutes, but this Blue Devil squad just wilted as Okafor and Company willed the Huskies to victory.
I don’t know why I felt UConn dominated this game. They pulled it off at the end, probably because they had one of the best rosters in college basketball, but they snuck that out at the end.
The meccas of college basketball, the University of Connecticut and Duke University going at it, for the 3rd time in NCAA Tournament, 1990, 1999 and 2004.... All 3 memorable games, with UConn winning 2 of those 3 games
People get lazy with this crap. Oh let’s just put Jordan at #1 because we don’t know any better. If you really think his shot vs Utah is the greatest shot ever taken or greatest moment, you’re just a dick rider. There’s nothing amazing about any 90s championship the bulls won. They were never underdogs, never faced a team that was great
Tyler Hansbrough carried this squad throught out the season and tournament. They are a powerhouse blue blood team.North Carolina had just won a title in the 2004-05 season so I wasn't surprised that the Tarheels won this one.And I don't like North Carolina but I have to respect thier basketball program that sent players to the NBA like Michael Jordan,Vince Carter, and Eric Montross.
An absolute classic. This one was really emotional for me as a fan. My grandmother passed away just a couple days earlier. She watched every UConn game religiously. When Emeka came back in the game from foul trouble and completely took over, it was like a sign from the heavens.
not that I expect most people to remember this who weren’t UConn fans or students in 2004… but the biggest joke of this NCAA tournament was them not being a 1 seed. They were clearly the best team in the tournament. Outside of this game, every other final was a blowout. I remember Jay Bilas on ESPN the night of the seeding laughing at the 2 and said “have you seen these guys play?” mocking the selection committee
They had 6 losses which was more than any of the 1 seeds and objectively their season long profile was not as good as St. Joseph's, Kentucky, Duke, or Stanford Now they were a talented team and was able to shake off the regular season doldrums in the Big East Tournament and in the NCAA Tournament
@@DanielSong39 i’m not arguing the record. I’m just referencing Bilas’ comment because anyone who watched them that season could tell… those losses, it almost looked like they just decided to not play hard here and there. But when they decided to turn it on, no one could beat them. The record was a mirage and fans who watched closely knew that. All I meant.
@@SouthSwellin I've also seen these types of teams mail it in during the Tournament too and get eliminated early so it goes both ways By the time they made the Final Four though it was obvious they had shaken off the doldrums which was why they were favored over Duke, probably the strongest possible opponent for UConn
@@DanielSong39 true for some teams I agree. But Calhoun come March usually had his teams ready to go. They’re one of the best with these high pressure single game eliminations. UConn Duke was the championship that year. No one would question that. There was even buzz about reseeding the final 4 after that one.
2023 Amondo Bacot breaks all of Tyler Hansbrough unc basketball records. Amondo Bacot played in a championship game lost by 3 points to Kansas in 2022..time stamp
