I've been overdoing it and actually causing more knots and tangles in my extremely long hair. At 72 years old, I'm proud that my hair is thick and has grown to my buttocks. I ignore all those who believe that once you reach a certain age you should cut all your hair off. That may be true if your hair is damaged, and doesn't look healthy. Stay away from hairdressers if all you want is a trim or a dusting of the ends. You can do that yourself, and with your length, nobody is going to see if it's not perfectly even. For more complicated styles, layering and coloring, always go to the professional, but you'll save alot of time, money and stress if you care for your ends yourself.
It happened to my hair as well and my hair goes down to my waist it’s because of the elastic at the bottom so I’d recommend using mini scrunchies instead of the elastic at the bottom
Growing up till I was late teen I did NOTHING to my hair. No blow drying, no straightening (straighteners weren’t even invented yet I don’t think) no dying, no mousse or hairspray or any product, and even barely brushing because I was a tomboy who care less about my hair. Now when I look back on pics of my youth, it was amazingly healthy!!!! I continued along those lines for much of my 20’s….in my 30’s it started going downhill so I started doing a few things. Now I’m 41 and it’s not horrific but it’s the worse it’s ever been. I do attribute SOME of it to medical things going on, low iron which I know is horrible for hair. I started iron pills 3 months ago but haven’t noticed any change 😒
