Great podcast! I have the utmost respect for Mr. Loy. I'm sorry we didn't get together the last time I was in ID. Tomas, I would like to offer that you can in fact make a short dog go longer. That has been a fallacy that emanated from the field trial world. For example, dogs hunted in Maine on grouse/woodcock when immersed in hunting the vast open prairies will - in time - extend themselves to "productive range". I had a Brittany I trained for a customer that was a close working dog which excelled in hunt tests. When we brought him out west, he was virtually useless for 3 days. On day 4 he started to open up. Sadly, we had a string of dogs and a time restriction. That said, he became very productive and was a gem in the central mid-west on Bobwhite, pheasants, chickens! This dog is but one example of many I have developed over the last 40+ years. The reason that I mentioned the distinction in trials dogs is that, in order to be competitive in trials (especially horseback trials) your dog must convey "independence". "Range" for a respectable field trialing competitor is the resultant outcome of said independence. This facet of trialing is often misinterpreted with the word "range". A wild bird hunter (pointing breed) never hunts at a specific range. It learns to hunt the effective distance from the gun(s) to be successful on the various species while taking into to consideration the habitat/cover. Birds teach dogs what they need to know, if you don't interrupt the learning curve which a vast majority of owner/handlers do. My pointer and setter both hunt grouse/woodcock, Bobwhite quail/pheasant/chickens, Huns/sharptail, chukar/valley quail, the three species of AZ quail, etc. Thank goodness, or I'd need a multitude of bird dogs wouldn't I? 😁 The amount of "juice" you use for avoidance training is dependent on the dog. If you WHACK a dog with too much, it can cloud their understanding of what initiated the discomfort. Hence, I like what Mr. Loy said about toning it down, especially with the typical Gordon. Gordon's or least the few I've had the pleasure of developing are very intelligent and respond well to a patient gentle leader - mores-so than most of the Germanic breeds. The other distinction I found in the Gordons fairly consistently was their EXCEPTIONAL noses. The one Gordon I trained became an Open FTCh and the hardest task of handling that dog was producing a clueless pen-raised Bobwhite that would sit there unless stepped on! I remember (more-than-once) judges thinking I had a non-productive because it took SO long to flush the find but I knew....it was there...WAY out there sometimes!

Nice video! Glad there’s people like Greg out there who are passionate about saving a rare native bird. I hunted grouse in Wisconsin a few years back and had the time of life. I joined the RGS 3 years ago and I’m guessing I’m the only member in Eastern Iowa 😂. The last habitat dinner in Balltown last spring it was mentioned that a deer hunter flushed a grouse. I hope they still have a future in NE Iowa.

Thanks for sharing!! I love English Setters just for a part of the family !! They are great loving dogs, and deserve love back!! I had a English , and he passed March second of 2023, and he is missed, but thank God I still have my Irish Setter, and he is still energetic at ten years old! Thanks for all you do, and could you give us a bit of history on the Ryman English . Thanks, James

Note that Irish guys refer to a 2 year old as a pup. Significant because in the US setters are being hunted at barely a year old! My US setter was 15 months old before I hunted him. It has paid off!

I am a Setter lover. These dogs have a unique personality. Supreme pointing dogs but incredibly loving dogs with the sweetest natures. I love English Cockers and just bought my new bride a little pocket rocket! She is utterly smitten. We will get to hunt her on grouse and woodcock next October in Wisconsin! Cannot wait!

Both Dad and my uncle are gone now but the memories I have hunting quail at Baier's Den are truly dear to my heart. I want to thank Wayne and Pat for being wonderful human beings and telling me stories of my dad that make me smile. Trevor Finch

Ours is currently placed on a couple blocks to raise it and stabilize for dog. To mount to a fence you may sandwich two boards onto the fence and attach the mount plate that comes with the heater unit. Good luck with your installation.

I'm an English Setter mom, and a foster for a nationwide rescue in the U.S. They are wonderful dogs! With all the setters up for adoption, I hate seeing them bred for profit. I can't begin to say how many are abandoned when they don't meet the expectations of the hunters that buy from breeders. It's truly heartbreaking.

Great series. I’ve been to Ireland twice, and even on my 1st trip I spent an evening in a pub talking with the guys on how I could hunt and fish. I’ve wanted to do exactly what you’re doing for years! Thanks for sharing and letting us live vicariously through your experience. The folks over there are great people. I can’t wait to go back. It’s also fascinating to see their traditions and methods for a pheasant hunt. Hopefully you’ll be able to return the favor to them and host a Midwest pheasant hunt. Slainte!
