When he wasn’t in one of his crazy manic fits, Keith Moon was actually a very charming person. I think that’s the biggest reason why people tolerated his wild and crazy antics.
I had a piece of jewellery made by Paul Ravn who was Emerson, Lake & Palmer's personal jeweller. His workshop was in the same building as the studio where The Who and Led Zeppelin used to practice. He told me that one morning he was in early working and wasn't expecting anyone. The doorbell rang and Paul asked "Who is it?" Ringing the doorbell was Keith Moon who answered with "Who." Once again, Paul, "who is it?" Keith - "Who." This went on until he finally opened the door and saw it was The Who. They'd been at the pub across the street and came over to mess with Paul. 😂 He called Paul, "The Engravy" because he was working on engraving the drum kit for Carl Palmer.
Keith here talks about turning the cymbals on his drum kit to make them shields to protect him from flung vegetables from the angry audience. Ringo actually did do that at least one time. I gather this technique isn't as much of a joke as we might think.
Take a maniac-depressive, let him become an insanely talented drummer, put him is an iconic rock band making obscene amounts of money, surround him with all manner of powerful temptations, from women to drugs and booze - and wallah, you've got Keith Moon!
High as a kite. Back then people were expected to talk to a certain standard, as is evident here. It's interesting how the generations have proceeded from Keith's.
Yes, Moon ended his evenings with tossed salad... Champagne... And elephant tranquilizers, followed by a dip in the pool, while still in the car. Good times... Good times
