You said that you wanted to possibly draw authors eventually... I feel like I must share this story with you. During covid 19, I found myself incarcerated in county jail for ten months which is another story for another time. Anyways, we were locked in 2 person cells for 23 hours per day and we could get one book per week, not of our choosing. Those books were the only thing that gave me any kind of escape in there, until I ordered a pad of blank paper and some pencils from the commissary store. This is when I taught myself to draw portraits. All of them were the pictures of the authors on the back covers. Drawing these authors became such an escape for me that I eventually found myself trading ramen Noodles for author photos. My favorite author to draw is Stephen King. I would love to see you do a portrait of him! I'm much better at portrait drawing now, but I still have every one of those drawings and they are surprisingly very special to me lol. Thank you for the great videos... They are helping me a lot!
Emily, thank for your inspiring video and sharing your process with so much fun and joy! God bless your art and your life. That´s a beautiful portrait! It reales deserve to be hang up on a wall and be admired!! Congratulations!! Just a fun fact, when I saw the beginning I was so confused cause I thought it was a gouache painting - and then it turns clear that you paint in gouache too! Cheers from Brazil!!
It was totally not a failure listen to all of the helpful insights you gained as your narrating. You learn so much about what you needed to do differently and that is a total success!
These came out. Wonderful Emily! I say the kiss method is keep it simple, smarty! It is hard to believe this is a new medium for you. You really do handle it very beautifully.
My favorites are the 4th one and the second one. Even though you said it was your least favorite, the purple hues made a big difference. Plus, I've seen the reference and thought you naled it! What brand of gouache are you using?
This was so beautifully presented and rendered with your uasual distilled broadstrokes and tone control. Someone said that "tones do the heavy lifting but colour gets the glory" I see so much here that applies equally to gouache work. I do have your brushes btw, they're beautifully designed and I additionally like that their muted colours aren't distracting. And I'm about to break them in! So - Kind Thanks Emily - for all you do, these are truly polished broadcasts from every respect and you of course have so much to offer. - John (Ottawa)
Wow there’s so much I love about this. You make all the objects I wouldn’t consider painting feel beautiful it’s the colors and line quality . You are talented.
Yup. The stick is a must for big areas. It could also have a bit of chamois type cloth held over the tip with a rubber band. Try it and you'll see the advantages. Also you'll discover some new tricks for doing lines.
I'm going to start oil painting soon (after a years and years long break), and so I was excited to see this! Beautiful work. May I ask why you keep so much paint just sitting on the palatte? Thank you for sharing your work and process! <3
That's so exciting, it's like getting reacquainted with an old friend! 😊 There's no special reason for the paint on the palette, it is just dried paint from the past year or so. But because they are oils, there is still some usable paint below the crusted surface! I also keep them as a sort of a placeholder for where to put my paint colours on the palette 🎨 Thanks for watching!!
I've had many paintings like that 😅 My advice is to just keep making paintings, and try to enjoy the learning process- eventually things will "click" 😊
@@emhuesart I appreciate that, thank you. I've been slowly relearning that feeling/process after social media bulldozed it 🤣 Also want to say I've been following you for a while now, thank you so much for sharing your work and thoughts with us! I was in a slump after going through college/the work force and having less time to do art. Watching your videos helped me get inspired again! Will always be here supporting your artistic journey~
Also, really nice seeing your pallet colors and your mixing process. You could shift the camera view even further to the right to shoe more of the pallet and mixing area and still have a good view of your painting. Excellent to see the process and hear your thoughts as you go along.
Thank you for the detailed list of your palette colors! I tried to read from a screen shot, but this really helps! Also got your brushes, will have to report back . . ,
I'm so so glad!! I have an updated "how to paint a portrait in gouache" video on my channel, if you're interested 😊Wishing you the best on your painting journey!
I love your style soo much, it's just as soothing on the eyes as your voice is to the ear. I aspire to paint this well one day, although I'm just now seeing your art, this is seriously inspiring me!
Hiii i just wanted to make a recommendation. I think u should TOTALLY draw violet baudelaire from a series of unfortunate events. I loveee ur art and i hope u see this and draw herrrr🎀🎀
I love your RU-vid Channel Emily thank you for sharing your Art practise ❤ I am still searching my way but I fell in love with Oil paint 2 years ago although I am approaching it in a Total abstract & experimental way , I also want to learn figurative Oil painting as I already can draw since I was little and went to art Academy also when I was little. My dream was to go to Art school later in but my parents wouldn’t allow in so now Manu years later I am searching my OWN way. I also just bought gouache , never tried ik before so I am curious 😊 thank you for sharing , lovely kind greetings from Belgium 🙂
I think that's completely normal! I often feel the same way. Like any traditional medium, it just takes practice. I think part of the reason our digital art can feel flat is because we have the ability to keep fixing/perfecting things. I find limiting the painting to one layer can help with this!
