Those pesky 55 MPH speed limits on highways, freeways, and Interstates lasted A LONG TIME. 21 years on the NYS Thruway, for example. While the slow speed was annoying to 4-wheeled motorists, it was extremely harmful to the trucking industry and mostly for truck drivers just trying to make a living and get to their destinations on time. Commercial truck drivers had a hard time staying at 55 as most trucks then had an optimum efficiency of operation at 60 mph. 55 mph not only wasted time, but was wasteful of diesel fuel's full potential power output. And whoever thought of and implemented split speed limits for cars versus trucks was a DAMN FOOL. Thankfully, those are mostly gone everywhere now.
