My son asked me about Randy out of the blue. It's how I ended up here. I'm with you Man. I think that Randy is an absolute genius. I love all his work, but my favorite is his satire on racism, Short People. It's so brilliant, yet it caused some really stupid people to go nuts! But isn't it true that genius is so often misunderstood!?
And sure, bash him for Short People and totally ignore "Texas Girl at the Funeral of Her Father." I grew up on Randy and Tom Waits and Harry Nilsson and Laura Nyro and all you other musician sorts of people who shaped me so much. I thank you forever. I love you forever. If I have any bravery in me, it's probably mostly because of you.
I think it's really ironic that Randy's "Short People" got outrage because people who happened to be below average height took it absolutely literally, when the song was about people who don't take a second look at something or take it as face value and then ruin things for the rest of us imaginary types, which is why i think Pixar (at the time) really related to him.
The first Randy song I heard was Alan price's cover of Simon Smith ... Never learned it was Randy's until years later. Next, I had to pull the car over to listen to Dusty singing I Think It's Going To Rain Today. Years later, the staff in a store I managed really enjoyed the background tape playing Short People (I'm 5'4") - we all laughed. First album I bought was Baby Days, produced by the excellent Mark Knopfler. Now I play Simon Smith and Louisiana 1927on my guitar with other old codgers in the pub. Great songs, great chords, great man.
A rather snarky "tribute" to an amazing musician. Indeed, his wonderful career as a film composer was only an afterthought, and there was too much about the creator of this disappointing short.

People might not buy Randy Newman records. They do and did buy millions of his songs. And yes someone has already had almost every thought possible. There are and have been too many of us not to
I am average looking. I have bought four Randy Newman records. He is an amazing song writer. I play some of his songs and they make me weep.... "every time it rains." etc.
Yes he is a genius. He's an amazingly smart funny and amusingly broken man whose songs are very very personal and intimate. My latest favorite is SHAME, in which a weak needy dirty old man coerces a younger girlfriend before berating her and apologizing. I love the way Randy Newman tells his backup singers to SHUT UP so he can finish his apology. It always makes me think of my father would act with one of his whores. BTW: I don't know why no one realizes that SHORT PEOPLE is about Donald Trump and his ilk.
Randy Newman always was a F##KING GENIUS! No true artist paints a painting worrying if someone will like it... they paint to challenge and please themselves. Randy painted with notes and words.
Genius or not, Randy Newman‘s songs have meant a great deal to me since the early 1970s. I consider him to be a national treasure, and one of America’s great songwriters.
I adore Randy Newman's songs. One of my favorite songs that anyone has ever written is "I Think It's Gonna Rain Today." His sense of humor is such a turn on!

I'd never have thought Keith knew of Leo, but then, Keith was a sponge for influences, and then put them thru his own filter. I shared this YT with some guys who are Leo fans, and said "the seemingly unrelated photo is part of the package, you're welcome."

His work stands alone in its genius. Few have the balls to write lyrics which are soo pointed to the soul. You make me laugh with nearly every tune and your southern drawl drives the joke ever deeper. Don't stop, don't ever stop.
It's nearly Christmas again and once more I listening to this - just wonderful an arrangement. Keith Emerson had a magic touch for his interperations of already great music. The Nice ELP sadly missed.
