Hi folks, Jason & Jennifer here! Welcome to Hanbleceya Ranch - an Off-Grid Maine Homestead.
We're just a couple of folks who made a decision in 2010 to off-grid homestead. We spent all of those years raising a family and preparing ourselves to make this wild dream a reality and it paid off!!!
We purchased our ~60 acres in Eastern Maine in 2019 and moved permanently in June 2021. We've been working very hard pursuing our homestead dream.... Come join us on our journey by clicking the subscribe button!!!
The first time I ever heard one was in the wilds of MN. Alone in a trailer with no electricity, surrounded by trees off a dirt road, I heard that scream. It woke me up from a sound sleep, and I was literally frozen in place for about a half hour...mortified. Decades earlier, the man who owned our property had axed his wife to death as she milked their cow.....and so, the fear seemed pretty darn real....that man was spending the rest of his life in prison after being found hiding in the woods for days before capture. Ah, the memories.....yikes.
I have seen fishers many times while deer hunting in November in central NY. They have passed close and saw me but weren't bothered by my presence. Just continued on their way. I have never heard their voices though.
Maybe you can call it the Inipi Shed? I think it means to live again or life within and you will be fixing and creating new things in that shed. It is a Lakota word just like Hanbleceya. Just a thought
Jason, just a thought, the shear force that a screw can take is a lot less than a 16D nail. Since your rafters are in shear when weight on the roof spreads the wall, I would be concerned your screwed together rafters are lacking in strength. As far as Garage or shop will you have a smaller door on the side for quick access? Otherwise, when you open those big barn doors, you are letting heat out. Forgive me if you feel I am speaking out of turn. Good luck!
Hi Joe, appreciate the comment, no forgiveness needed 😉 All of the rafters are secured to the building by nails. The collar ties and rafter ties were screwed together, but I am thinking that in order for the walls to spread, not only do the screws across nine rafters ties and 3 collar ties have to fail, but so do all of the nails in those corresponding rafters. I completely understand the concern, but I simply cannot see a scenario where that would happen. Given the snow load we could potentially see. Now truth be told, I may be underestimating it, but given my experience with all of my other buildings, we don’t have much of a load issue on my 412 pitched roofs so I have to think the shops 512 roof should be good. If I’m wrong, you folks will be the first to know. 😊 I do plan on putting a man door in once I add the lean to in but that’ll be a future project. Thank you for the comment and support! 😊
You have a very nice Homestead. I like your channel. Entertaining and a lot of good information. Thanks! I just started watching your channel so can you take us around your whole homestead and let us see it? Thanks@
O, yes by the way your camera skill are pretty damn great as well lol. Good luck to you and the Mrs. Please have a great Fall and Winter ❄️ be safe buddy.
Hi Jason n Jen, Froze? What the heck? Brrrr,,,, No thanks. Lol Shew so glad you got your SHOP done, lol. Your garage is up the by your house for your vehicles! So yeah shop it is for me. Lol it truly looks awesome!! Good job to you and all that helped! God Bless my friends ❤
Hi Pam!! Winter is coming…a bit too fast. So far it seems like “shop” is it! We are so glad to finally be at the finish line!! Have a great night and God bless! ♥️🙏♥️
Ties in the lower third of rafter are called rafter ties and ties in the upper third near the ridge are called collar ties. I would run one more brace on top of your rafter ties to the center of the gable ends to connect them. Also some long diagonals on the inside of the stud walls to keep it plumb.
Thank you for the info and the tips! I like the idea of connecting the rafter ties to the gable ends and the wall bracing is in the cards 😉 Thanks again!! 😊
Living in Maine, we see that float plane fairly often. Our daughter-in-law is a Maine Forest Ranger and they have a plane and the float plane is the Game Warden plane. We live down along the Kennebec and have private float planes land on the river and dock up at the Town dock and have lunch at the restaurant. Nice job on the “shop”.
yep in time that building may have a old couch, small frig, tv for the game, tool shelves, work benches on wheels, vice grips, dart board, wrenches hanging on walls, calendar that never gets updated to the right month, yep-yep-yep. maines version of a lanai. needs a sign on top of doors...J & J's outbuilding....
You are exactly right! 👍 I do think that he will put his hammock out there too!! I will have to check that he is working out there and not sleeping on the job!! 😊 I thought the sign should say…Jason’s Dog House!! 🤣😂
I'm going to close in my open ceiling here to keep the heat down to the first floor. This will also give me more storage space which I desperately need. I'm gonna cheat tho and use 2x6 holders and nail to that. Whatdaya do....when ya work alone, ya go the easy route!
It only becomes a garage if its only use is parking a car in it. To a person who build/fixes things themselves any enclosed space that has tools stored in it is a workshop first and foremost! Workshops lookng great!😁
First time seeing one that close. Witko our middle dog met one the first year we were here. Didn’t and well for him! Thanks so much for your support!! 😊
Cozy time. I just love that stove❤ Living closer to the seasons is an unexpected benefit of homesteading, just feels right. Love your content, as always
It is cozy time!! 😊 Thank you! Our stove has been a blessing! Keeps us warm and I can cook with it (which was completely new to me). We love all of our seasons!! Thank you so much and thanks for watching!! ♥️
I am 100% satisfied with all all videos and pictures , of you guys and your family doges.. please keep up all the great work to make the homestead come to life.. most can't even do these.
I’m sitting in the other cabin sweating!! It’s 84° in here 52° outside. We haven’t added any wood for hours! 🥵 It was nice coming g in from being outside! Love wood heat!!♥️
@@malirabbit6228 it was cleaned out when we stopped running it last spring. We’ve made it a habit to clean it at the end of the season as opposed to the beginning.
