Jiraya was always on the quest of his destiny, and felt like it was never fully completed. Therefore he was always away from the village as a leaf village spy. Turns out pretty much every step on his way was needed in order to put Naruto exactly where he needed to be, in order to become to child of prophecy.
Love this scene and how it shows how honored Jiraiya was to have been chosen to give Naruto his name and be his godfather. Plus you can tells Jiraiya loved Minato like a son so it's no surprise how quickly Jiraiya later took to Naruto and loved him like his own grandson.
Fact that we never got any interaction between Minato and Jiraiya other than this is criminal. We should've gotten some flashbacks of Jiraiya training him back in the day. You can tell how much Minato loves and respects his teacher. To Minato, Jiraiya is the greatest Shinobi that has ever existed even if Minato may actually be stronger. Seeing how the other 2 in Team Jiraiya never are actually seen other than that 1 instance I kinda want to believe that they either dropped out as ninja or something and that's why Minato and Jiraiya are so close. There was a lot of 1 on 1 training just like he did with Naruto which is why Naruto also thinks Jiraiya is the greatest.
It bothered me that Jiraiya wasn't more sympathetic with Naruto like when he was yelling at him when learning Rasengan. The man never even once hugged him after all he's been through
