76. Flexibility A newborn is soft and tender, A crone, hard and stiff. Plants and animals, in life, are supple and succulent; In death, withered and dry. So softness and tenderness are attributes of life, And hardness and stiffness, attributes of death. Just as a sapless tree will split and decay So an inflexible force will meet defeat; The hard and mighty lie beneath the ground While the tender and weak dance on the breeze above.

@Gar96229 Год назад
@@Finn959 I’ve always considered myself to a rather gentle, meek person, and for years I have been bullied for it, for being soft, or unmasculine. This scene gave me a new way of looking at not only myself, but also the world around me. It introduced me to taking an interest in contrarian, philosophical views, and I have never been the same since…which is a good thing. Therapy whilst not unhelpful, taught me about things like cognitive distortions, but always made me feel as though it wasn’t really addressing the truth of things, whilst this video did.

he who sees life the way it is, without interfering, is neither hard or soft. he feels no engagement, no attachment, his experiences mix into a kind of soup. but humility has its place for those who've been demanding all their lives, yet its not the final destination. the final destination is not a place, it cant be reached, touched or described, but it can be sensed and pointed to. a poem by tarkovsky's father points to this 'place beyond time' quite well: 'So summer is gone, leaving no epitaph. It's still warm in the sun, only that's not enough. All that true could have come, like a five-fingered fluff. Folded into my palm, only that's not enough. No evil was slighted in the good aftermath. World was festively lighted, only that's not enough. Life forever was tucking, caring, making me laugh. I was really lucky, only that's not enough. No leaves ever seared, no limbs broken rough. Day, like glass, washed all clear, only that's not enough..'

What is the significance of the Zone in Stalker? In the story the Zone is a place where extra-terrestrial visitors came and left behind advanced technological artifacts, worth money on the black market which has sprung up around the Zone, cordoned off by the government for our protection. But in the film itself, the significance of the Zone is that it is a place we can go to reconnect with the Mysterious (capital M) aspect of our existence. This is the filmic logic of these poetic interludes, which occur throughout Stalker, to put us in the same contemplative mood as the characters. The interlude here is an amalgamation of different sources. For example, the definition of passion is lifted almost directly from Herman Hesse's novel The Glass Bead Game. And the idea that 'weakness is a great thing' is from The Tao Te Ching.

What he means at least for me is that, life in its purest form, untouched by memory/emotions/time/flesh is when it's most powerful. But whereas when humans grow old, and associate ourselves with memory, flesh, emotions, will and reason, life starts to get fainter and weaker, turns into a mere projection of things around you.

“Let everything that’s been planned come true. Let them believe. And let them have a laugh at their passions. Because what they call passion actually is not some emotional energy, but just the friction between their souls and the outside world. And most important, let them believe in themselves. Let them be helpless like children, because weakness is a great thing, and strength is nothing. When man is born he is weak and malleable. When he dies he is hard and insensitive. When a tree is growing, it’s tender and pliant, but when it’s dry and hard, it dies. Hardness and strength are death’s companions. Pliancy and weakness are expressions of the freshness of being, because what has hardened will never win"
