In my opinion this is the best version of this sketch and the funniest! Poor Terry Jones trying so hard to keep a straight face during John Cleeses rant at the end, just priceless! 😂😂
One of the great scripts and performances at the Secret Policeman's Ball. He was at Uppingham School when I was at Oakham School and were in the same year. We must have rubbed shoulders as we played rugby, cricket and hockey against each other all the time, but I don't, sadly, recall his face - and it isn't one you're likely to forget!
The two killers of British humour. The spinal tap of contemporary brit comedy. About as funny and getting an arrow through the neck, and then discovering there's a huge tax bill attached to it.
Years later (about 1987) when VHS was oh so briefly king, my friends and I would learn this word for word. Haemoglobin was the one for us. Quite extraordinary how Rowan makes pretty standard words hysterical. And some funny words, funnier. I think you have to have gone through what he is lampooning, to lampoon it so effectively. So much of this will have actually been said.
I was there. Got hold of 4 tickets from the box office in person, for the grand old price of £20 (that's a mighty £5 a ticket) Myself, girlfriend and kid brother. Sold the spare outside face value, 5 quid, to a long haired bloke into The Who, because he'd heard, "Pete Townshend was gonna be there." Great night. Never bettered.
lol that John Cleese hated nothing more than prancing about on stage repeating some tired old line he didn't think was funny the first time around. Bet he's great at parties. Ok, maybe second to having to wait around for his drunk and stoned colleagues to crawl out of whatever gutter they fell into.
Don't bother buying the amazon prime video if you're a #BillHader fan f- what you see here is basically it, same crap wig they stuck Billy in, on SNL. sigh
Actually, the live performance of this sketch at The Secret Policeman's Ball - a charity event some years later - is well worth looking at because they are enabled extremes!
