He does emulate the styles of those drummers but it’s not necessarily what they would have played. For example I don’t see Bonham playing what is essentially Zeppelin’s “Rock n Roll” on this 🤷🏽♂️
YASS!! So cool you got it through. I did this one and it got blocked. My old band opened up for these guys another life ago it seems like LOL!!! You are killing it bro! Awesome job Jim!
Sorry, but this is not a good idea, especially for beginners. It's really easy to lose control and smash the top tube of your slide against the bell, denting the slide. Better idea: get some chalk or rosin and put it on the bell lock 🙂
@bobforties1130 I'll try the rosin trick. It's not just kids having problems. I have 80 year old players that don't have the strength to tighten up their 60 year old King. Replacing the brace with receiver and the male taper and lock nut is very expensive and not likely something they would do. Much less my desire. I have plenty of rosin. I'm never too old to learn new tricks. Thanks.
Mr.flys2, this one fits right in with the Weezer song Bryan did a couple of days ago. I love the new glasses and crew cut hair, and as usual, you handled the drumming in an ever amazing manner.❤️🙏👏❤️🙏👏❤️
Excellent Jim! Looks like you’re having a great time playing this tune! Have to admit, it’s the first time I’ve ever paid attention to the drum part in this song. Thanks for sharing. 🥁🥁🥁👍👍👍
Thank you! When I first heard it, I liked it. Then I jammed with it and was like, no better listen closer, because it just didn't quite have the feel and punch it needed. Then it came together and rocks pretty hard.
Wow, Jim, very cool! Way to knock out this 90s party classic! My old band used to play this one and it’s one that never gets old! Great video production!
Those HH are fire! Great song. Of course, great drummer. Love the floor tom. Does that CS head help with the sound and tuning? I always have issues tuning my floor toms.
Got a chance to check email while in Canada. Thanks, Kelly! New Beats for hats. The CS is just what I have on it. I would opt for an Ambi or Emperor probably. Eventually it will get changed. I'll email soon with our tune idea.
Amazing cover and awesome sound mix man! Great drumming! Coming here because of the shoutout by earldrum in his actual episode of Ask Earl Anything! 🤘🤘🤘
Great shuffle ! I would be great if you worked out the B part in Boz Scagg's we were always sweethearts. The beat in the B section after verse is a killer. thanks
Very nice. Great song from what I thought was late 80s. Turns out it was released in '83. Where does the time go? Some songs like this one take you back & I try to remember where I was & what I was doing.
Thanks, Bob. Yeah, my one camera didn't work right, so I needed something to bring more visual interest. I appreciate the comment. Looking forward to your next offering.
When I see that you have released another drum cover I know that what I see and hear will be done in the most professional of manners, because that is what you are, my friend. You are a professional’s professional to the highest degree. Wonderful drumming to this Journey classic, Mr.flys2.❤️🙏🏻👏🏼❤️🙏🏻👏🏼😢
@earldrum Thanks a bunch! Steve is possibly my number 1 hero. He never stops growing and inspiring. This will probably be my last video for a while. Going on vacation where I'll have no cell service for a couple weeks in Sept.
This is above my paygrade, so i'll just take your word for it about the meter and other technical stuff. What I can say is this is kick ass all the way through. Amazing groove. Awesome sound. Drums are tuned perfectly. Love the playing and dynamics. Amazing job, man. I definitely could not play anything even close to this. Did I say amazing?! LOL
Well thanks, little brother, with the big sound. I can say I know where it is weak. I do not have the kind of chops I need to pull off these 4 choruses of drum solo. I almost cut it to show just one chorus. But, caution is the better part of valor and I am kind of a go for it guy and hope for the best. I know my weaknesses. Thanks for recognizing the strengths. But I am a little bummed on only 66 views. This was by far the hardest song I have ever done. Time for me to cover Old Time Rock and Roll by Bob Seager.... LOL!
Awesome! I wish I would have gotten the opportunity to be his friend. All the interviews I have seen, he would have been a good hang. Very articulate man. And he swung so hard. You have no idea how much he impacted my playing....to this day!
Jim, I have a VERY similar story from 16-year-old me being blown away and driven nearly to tears, standing backstage at a Basie Orchestra show, summer 1980. I was 16 also. I got to hang with Duffy, met Freddie Green, Butch Miles hosted a party at his home that day and the guys were all pretty ‘happy’…another era. I’m going to post an ‘answer’ story video to yours specifically. I’m in NY/Maryland, where you at?
Jim that 22” Paiste Traditional ride is a killer cymbal for this track! Great funk groove and making all the hits! The drums sound awesome too … great work on this one … is this a Mike Clarke drum track? Also your soloing chops are dialed in my friend! Great work!
Good morning to you,my high flying friend. I just don’t understand jazz, and can’t fr the life of me figure out how you jazzists can even begin to know what to play and when to play it. To me, it’s well played music with drum/cymbal hits going everywhere. It’s a mezzmerizing mess of mystical music.❤️🙏👏❤️🙏👏🤷😂🤷 This is an awesome performance by a very talented captain of the airwaves.
Earl, thank you! And Greg and CCM. This was the live version that had Vinnie on it. Kind of hard to come up with 4 choruses of drum solo because his chops are endless and mine are about 1 chorus worthy. But I liked the vibe of the live, recent version more than the 1973 one. Really hard tine. Thanks everyone!
With the amount of hours you have in that repair wouldn’t have been cheaper to just buy a new instrument. Just out of curiosity how much would a repair like that cost?
In this case, 2 thjngs. They wanted that horn repaired. It was a borrowed horn. Replacment wojld have been far more. I think this only ran about 250.00 when I did it. A used horn would have even been a bit more than that.
I have a 1963 Broadkaster red sparkle set 14 snare, 12 & 14 toms and 20" bass purchased new by me. Still my one and only set. Never was happy with the snare response so use Ludwigs, either a 5 x14 Supraphonic or a 6.5 x14 BB. What I find surprising is that you had no trouble fitting new heads to the Gretsch's. I had to find heads that were purposely over size to easily slip on, i.e., "vintage" grades.
@ericbrunner4140 and today Remo make Vintage head to fit these slightly oversize shells. Yep Gretsch snares have never been classics. Ludwigs are. Gretsch snares are just raspy. I had a 6 1/2 blue sparkle round badge. I wanted to love it. I could never get it to sound good, so I sold it for $50.00 to a Gretsch freak in Ohio...like 1988. I'm sure he was happy.
Thanks! That's about our 3rd gig together. Trying to do Soul music and some jazz. More accessible stuff for folks. Though I have done straight up, really burning, sophisticated with both of these guys in different settings! Real piano etc.
