Having the entire set of Holbeins and a decent selection of Lumis, they both have a similar amount of dust imo. I think Prismas get dusty sometimes too, but not in the way Lumis anf Holbeins do. Beautiful piece, I can't believe you used all of the colors and I watched you do it lol. You did such a great job making everything blended and cohesive despite the huge number of colors.

Lana, Thank you so much for your informative videos. You talk about staining the paper first with a water soluble color. What do you use? Is it a watered-down acrylic paint? Thank you!

Oh, wow.... This has just brought things in focus so clearly! The other method you described by other artists had me confused, especially bringing in the extra colors so early. Your method puts down the skeleton, so you can see where everything's supposed to be as you flesh jt out. Thank you so much for taking the time to explain this. This has been an "aha!" moment for this newbie colored pencil artist!

I'm looking to pick up the Holbeins as well, but since the 150's are so damn expensive, I'm only going to buy the 50's of both pastels and ordinary pencils and then get others as I need them.

Im working on this challenge but i modifed it to work for my schedule. I dont always have the time to draw. So i dont worry about the time constrictions. I'll get it done as my time permits. I work 40+ hours a week with a lot of fluctuations in time so I'm just focusing on working on the portraits and styles instead.

Thank you very much for sharing these mistakes with us. I as just set to start using my pastels in a project when I was given 90:days notice to leave my home. Darn it all!!! I so dislike packing and moving and now at nearly 79, it is even worse lol.. rents have risen, so, I may not be able to afford a 3 bedroom house using one bedroom for me. One spare bedroom for grandchildren or family or friends and this third bedroom is used for my workroom. I’m also a textile artist you see, so having a third bedroom has been very important. So I’m trying not to become anxious as I pack and LABEL very, VERY carefully. I feel as lon* as I have a garage, I can store my crates of materials there instead of a third bedroom. How do you store YOUR supplies. A shelf or a draw please or just in those large plastic crates with clock on lids. Great for textile art supplies. My large work table my husband made me before he suffered from Alzheimer’s and needs to live in a locked ward in a Nursing Home is marvellous. He built all my storage into its base, clever chap that he used to be. So that can be stacked in a garage too. I will be interested in storage ideas please, When my mother passed a while ago, I got her spare not marching sets of drawers. Now they can slot in between my bedroom furniture or even in my Livingroom and probably drawers are a good storage area for pencils, brushes and ART paraphernalia for other than TEXTILE ART paraphernalia. Maybe I’ve answered my own question for me at the moment. Empty drawers in my garage can be slotted in between furniture I guess and there I have storage for everything. However I’d still be very interested in how YOUR own Art paraphernalia is stored, or also those who watch like I do please. I’m really enjoying your video’s and have subscribed thank you Lana!!! I wouldn't trust their lightfast claims, how can they be so cheap and lightfast? Anyone familiar with art supplies knows how expensive the professional ranges are due to the cost of the tests and pigments. Stick to Luminance and Derwent Lightfast if you plan on selling originals.
@LanaGloschatArt
@LanaGloschatArt 26 дней назад
I agree that when lightfastness is truly important (selling originals) that I would probably use different more tested pencils, however, personally lightfastness isn’t really an important factor for me when I’m working in a sketchbook or trying something new. And that’s the way I would recommend using these pencils. I think they are great for playing/experimenting and for beginners. Hopefully that is what came across in the video 😊

@@LanaGloschatArt For students these kinds of cheap sets that are emerging online are great, they are cheap and offer lots of colors. These new brands did not exist back then when I was in high school, nowadays we have more options, that's another good thing for young artists.

In another of your videos I commented how I don't like using solvent because it takes control away, but I'm re-thinking it now. The way your use the solvent for the first pass color to set the tones, then once it's dry you go over it again and again with more color and more detail. I'm going to watch your Solvents video and give it another try. Thanks for helping me.
@LanaGloschatArt
@LanaGloschatArt Месяц назад
Yes I just use it in the base layers to get that initial color into the tooth. I still feel like I have tons of control in next layers
@angiefranceskirwan
@angiefranceskirwan Месяц назад
I use your process as well and map in the darks and lights first. One thing I don't do, however, is use solvents. I have tried many of them and find that it removes the "control" I like so much about coloured pencils, I'm a very tight worker which works both to my advantage and disadvantage. I do like burnishing though since it is a very controlled process. I'd love to see you do more botanicals, the rose is beautiful and I have learned a lot from watching this video.
@LanaGloschatArt
@LanaGloschatArt Месяц назад
I saw your other comment and I’m excited for you to give it a try- but it’s never 100% necessary to use solvent. There are always other ways to blend if you can’t get solvent to work in your process
@mn8304
@mn8304 Месяц назад
Great video. You mentioned you like to use CP+solvent for your early stages of a drawing, since it fills in the white specks of the paper. Using a layer of watercolor paint underneath would do the same thing though, yes? So, as a watercolor artist, I'm trying to figure out if there's any advantage to me adding Gamsol to my process when making a colored pencil drawing. Any advice? Thanks!
@LanaGloschatArt

I have done a watercolor base layer under colored pencil drawings and I don’t end up using the solvent on these drawings with a water color or a watercolor pencil base. Great point!

Wow! Your painting of the rose with the lightfast budget Woomer pencils looks gorgeous! So impressive! The Holbein rose is also lovely, but I think I prefer the Woomer rose for its vibrancy and contrast . So interesting that you find the Woomer quality superior to Prismacolor. Thank you for experimenting with something new and doing it with integrity. God bless you!

Lovely paintings and colors.!I like how the colors were similar over the three. I wonder if the solvent will damage your paper and pigments over time. The use of water with (lightfast) Derwent watercolour pencils or perhaps ("exceptional lightfastness") Faber Castell Albrecht Durer water color pencils would be gentler on the paper and pigments. Thank you for the demonstration on 100% cotton papers and sharing your expertise and talents. God bless you!
@LanaGloschatArt
@LanaGloschatArt Месяц назад
Interesting question. Artist grade solvents like gamsol and neutral thin are safe on paper and will not damage. These are used in oil paintings and survive for a long time. A watercolor is also an option, but do it if you prefer the process not because you are concerned about solvent damaging your paper- it’s totally safe for cotton paper
