i don't know if it's just me ... But I really hate seeing a diesel Loco behind a steam Loco unless there is a perfect reason for it like the steam loco is broken down Otherwise I hate seeing it
All the time and work, learning forgotten skills. Rebuilding BIG BOY . Steam .... what an incredible power just boil water and wa-la all kinds of power. Now what you gonna do turbine or pistons?
Thank God for the British who invented the steam engine, the locos and railways, the jet engine, hovercraft, tv's, radar, computers and the world wide web! They changed and improved the world!
I knew the fireman of the 4501 he was a family friend. He has passed on now, but he shared with me some great memories when he was working and keeping that engine alive. I know he would've loved to see this video. RIP Ralph you are missed. #4501
Outstanding. Intellectual and emotional. A whole lot of effort obviously went into its making, and that's a credit to those volunteers behind the production. Wish more videos on this platform had the same dedication and spirit too. Thank you so very much.
One of the most heartwarming, beautiful, and best documentaries ever created by mankind. It must be an extremely fun experience to see the 4501 running in front of your own eyes. I hope I get that experience one day.
I think it's hilarious that they call 4501 a "southern" treasure but in service it was stationed in Princeton INDIANA, they kinda stole an Indiana steam treasure. Then avoided the whole state later on during her excursion career. How upsetting...
Just a crying shame to see all the mods and foolishness done to 4501. When I go to a museum I expect to see artifacts in their original, unadulterated condition. Once you start customizing these prized relics you lose your status as a museum
That’s absolutely absurd. If all equipment was backdated to their original status nothing would pass modern day safety regs. It’s obvious you know nothing of rail preservation
Superb Documentary. Great to se spirit of America through this restoration journey. Hats off to all Engineers of restoring team and the Msnagement to take this historic decision of revival of 4501
Grandpop, great grandpop, and great, great grandpop we’re rail men. Have you heard of grnetic memory and how experiences of our ancestors affect subsequent generations? I go nuts for trains and have been in love with trains since girlhood.
4501 was in the following movies Fool's Parade (1971) Ridin' The Rails with Johnny Cash (1974) Eleanor & Franklin (1976) Summer of My German Soldier (1978) October Sky (1999)
I’m a scientist, and was born in 1938. When young I had a short wave radio a stamp collection, and a globe, and that’s the way I learned about geography. I also could hear “a lonely train whistle blow” in the quiet of the night, and that was a trigger to my life spent in national security affairs and, in 1980, was elected a Fellow of the Explorers Club. I have traveled in trains pulled by steam engines in many parts of the world because that was the way it was. In fact, my father commuted by a steam engine drawn train to and from Chicago through my childhood, including putting pennies on the rails for the train to flatten them. Only a few years ago I was on a train in China pulled by a Big Red Rooster, on of the last countries to make, and use, steam engines. Great documentary, great memories.

I lived beside the tracks growing up and got to see the great steam train called The Powahatan. It was beautiful and awesome to see. I was in awe. It was just by chance it was out for a run that day.
I enjoyed this so much. I've always loved trains. They were a part of my growing up. I grew up in Salt Lake in the 50's and 60's about 4 blocks from the switching yard there. We had tracks to the north and south of us and us kids spent a lot of time there. I was fortunate enough to see steam engines in regular service before they lost their job. Seeing the 4501 right after it's last restoration was emotional. It was so gorgeous and in my mind is what a locomotive should be. Thanks again.
