Christianity today has either forgotten or just flat out rejected any gender roles God has given to us in the Bible. Men and women live as they want and if they marry they make their marriages as they want them to be with no thought of the distinct roles and responsibilities that God has given to men and women in his Word. While doctrines concerning the nature of God, the deity of Christ and the Gospel are certainly the most important doctrines in the Bible - they are NOT the only important doctrines. The Bible compares the Christian life to a race in many passages and it tells us that we will not win the crown(II Timothy 2:5) if we do not run the race lawfully. That means following God's will for our lives on a daily basis which includes following his rules, not ours, for our gender.

The problem with slavery is you couldn't humanize slaves regardless of rules because they will always be seen as property. The Romans had these laws too, but it didn't work. Joseph was a slave and was not treated harshly. When Potiphar's wife falsely accused him of rape, Potiphar wanted to kill Joseph. Once Potiphar realized that Joseph didn't rape his wife, he sent him to jail. Potiphar didn't want for his wife to be seen as less honorable than a slave. What ever rules you do to restrict slavery, it's inevitable that those rules will be ignored. They should have just said don't participate in slavery. You could always say take in poor people as workers.
